JOB SUMMARY
Under departmental direction, the Data Collector coordinates activities to support the Crash Injury Research Engineering (CIREN) Study. Provides assistance to an established research team by collecting data, keeping records, analyzing data, and preparing reports.Develops and maintains recordkeeping systems and procedures to ensure compliance with study protocols and all appropriate regulations. Visit hospital patients as needed to perform activities including, but not limited to: assist the research team with recruitment activities (screen and consent), administer questionnaires, take body measurements, photograph injuries and answer any questions about the research study. Responsible for the compilation, registration and submission of data, as required by the Sponsor.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Social Science, Education, or Public Health; or, an equivalent combination of experience and education including training in research methodology, computerized data processing, and/or interviewing techniques.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION
- Must complete the CITI certification for Human Subject Research if not already completed.
- All additional required WakeOne training for research coordinators.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Excellent reading comprehension
- Strong organizational skills
- Outgoing, professional, persistent, and familiar and open to working in the hospital environment
- Familiar with WakeOne and experienced with Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel, and Word
- A background in nursing or other health-related field
- Comfortable communicating with physicians
- A person that practices with a critical thinking approach and is not afraid to point out to a superior (MD, radiologist) that something doesn't look right
- Willing to perform data entry tasks over long periods of time during the day
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Recruit Study Participants - review daily trauma list and then make in-person hospital visits to consent all eligible participants.
- CISSWeb Data Entry - input data from Crash Investigator's field forms into CISSWeb, as well as collected medical data described below.
- Collect and Record Data - collect various forms of data from hospital record systems pertaining to the individual participants included in the CIREN research project.
- Determine and Code Injuries - use WakeOne to review patients' charts and compile a list of crash-related injuries. Code injuries using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) manual.
- Imaging Analysis - access participant radiology records via WFBMC software (AQNet, Intellispace, CIBpacs) and analyze imaging to determine best view of injury to assist with injury code determination. Team radiologists and MD's assist with determining the correct codes for injuries.
- Data Analysis - conduct analyses of collected data and discusses interpretations and conclusions with research team.
- Case Review - prepares powerpoint presentations that include all details of the case(s) to be presented monthly. Each case must be prepared to answer specific injury and radiology questions.
- Engineering Site Case Reviews - reviews other sites' cases and provides feedback prior to their presentation.
- Collaboration - work in partnership with peers and physicians on research team.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
