Summary:
The School of International Service (SIS) Office of Pre-college Programs at American University is seeking interested candidates to apply for the position of Data Assistant (Federal Work Study) to help process applications for high school students taking summer online courses at the University.
The Data Assistant will play a critical role in supporting data-driven decision-making and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the
High School Summer Scholars
(HSSS) and
National Student Leadership Conference
(NSLC) pre-college programs. The intern will be responsible for supporting program listservs, data entry, and analysis. The intern will collaborate with the Pre-college Director to collect, maintain, and analyze data to inform summer course planning and programming. This role is an excellent fit for individuals interested in the intersection of data analytics and university programs. Work Needs:
The period requiring assistance is early March through July for 10-15 hours/week. Much of the work can be done remotely. A principal component of the job is to assist online students with their student account creation and access to Canvas.

Responsibilities include:
Data Collection and Management:
  • Collect and organize student data from various sources, including Qualtrics surveys and external databases.
  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of data by conducting regular data quality checks and resolving discrepancies.
  • Maintain and update databases, spreadsheets, and other data repositories to ensure efficient data retrieval and accessibility.
Data Analysis and Reporting:
  • Assist in analyzing student-related data to identify trends, patterns, and insights that inform decision-making processes.
  • Generate reports, visualizations, and dashboards to effectively communicate data findings to university academic departments.
  • Collaborate with the Pre-college Director to develop and refine key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of targeted marketing initiatives.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
  • 10-15 Hours Per Week.
  • This position is for Spring and Summer 2024 with a strong possibility of renewing for future semesters.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study/
  • Current graduate student pursuing a degree in a relevant field such as data science, statistics, computer science, or a related discipline. Highly qualified undergraduates will also be considered.
  • Proficiency in data manipulation and analysis, especially Excel.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly and concisely.
  • Self-starter and team player able to implement projects independently.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • An interest in higher education and university programs is preferred but not a requirement.
  • Experience and/or interest in university systems such as Colleague is preferred but not a requirement.
