Job description

 This is a paid internship, range of $19/hr - $35/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

Semester students: May 20th to August 2nd

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Sound Transit’s Passenger Experience division oversees the experience of passengers making journeys throughout the Puget Sound region on Link, Sounder, ST Express, and Tacoma Link. The Innovation and Passenger Technology intern will have an opportunity to be a part of the Innovation and Passenger Technology Team, a team that pushes to improve passenger experience through innovative means. They will learn about our passenger technology services and gain insight into how a large regional transit system is managed.

 

PRIMARYDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

 

Job duties:

  • Project coordination and management
  • Review of GTFS-Pathways standards and applications that use the data set.
  • Propose and determine methods for data collection
  • Data collection field work, including determination of precise node locations, manual measurement of pathway distance, slope, cardinal direction, walkway type, wheelchair accessibility, stair counts, enclosure information, etc.
  • Data analysis and verification using as-built drawings, LiDAR mapping and other tools
  • GTFS-Pathways data generation
  • Meeting facilitation

 

Potential projects that may be assigned:

  • GTFS-Pathways data collection and development
  • Contributions to GTFS-Pathways specification
  • User testing

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing, enrolled in an associate, bachelor's or graduate degree program, working towards a degree in Assistive Technology, Software Engineering, Orientation and Mobility, Disability Studies or related field, or relevant two-year certificate.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Passion for technology, accessibility and overall quality
  • Interest in or work with assistive technologies. Examples: NVDA, JAWS, Zoomtext, Dragon Naturally Speaking.
  • Knowledge of the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) and GTFS extension standards
  • Experience with accessibility and assistive technology on one platform: Windows, Android, Mac or iOS.
  • Working knowledge of international accessibility guidelines and standards, such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) and the Accessible Rich Internet Applications (WAI-ARIA) from the World Wide Web Consortium
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Excellent planning, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Experience coordinating projects and leading meetings
  • Team player ability to build trustful relationships and to work in diverse teams
  • Knowledge of CAD software

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment, virtually and in the field.
