This position is located in the Division of Acute Disease Epidemiology/Immunizations within the Bureau of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control
This position serves a Medical Consultant for the Division of Acute Disease Epidemiology providing leadership and guidance for science-based decisions and serves as one of the state's authorities on public health measures for the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
Provides medical and epidemiologic consultation, guidance, and training to a variety of public and professional groups. Monitors and investigates cases and outbreaks of reportable diseases and directs outbreak control measures and assists with the analysis and interpretation of disease surveillance data.
Interprets guidance from federal agencies and other authoritative sources for implementation for special circumstance in South Carolina.
Provides medical consultation for the Immunization Division on issues such as standing orders and VAERS reports.
Participates in the implementation of comprehensive immunizations program, evaluation of measures that maximize immunization program effectiveness and represents the agency on state, national, and agency committees. Serves as preceptor for DHEC Advanced Practice Registered Nurses.
Monitors and investigates cases and outbreaks of reportable diseases. Directs outbreak control measures in cooperation with DHEC staff and other medical practitioners. Analyzes and interprets vaccine preventable disease data. Serves as consultant for DADE on call rotation (during working hours, nights, weekends, and holidays) for disease reporting and emergency response. Occasional back up to region medical director.
Provides medical and epidemiologic consultation and training to Division of Immunization (DI) and Acute Disease Epidemiology (DADE) Public Health Regions, other public health professionals, health care providers, and the public on surveillance and control of vaccine preventable diseases. Consults with the CDC and other public health partners. Serves as one of the state's authorities on public health measures for prevention and control of communicable diseases and other reportable conditions.
In collaboration with DI and DADE Division Directors, evaluates and follows up on surveillance and response quality measures with a focus on science-based decisions, legal mandates, and public health practice. Provides medical consultation and leadership to all DI and DADE staff for development of policies and procedures and standing orders with a focus on science-based decisions, legal mandates, and public health practice.
Participates in IIS implementation, disaster response and planning, acute disease prevention and control planning, and policy development, to include preparedness, pandemic influenza, mass casualty, and other public health emergencies.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Agency Additional Requirements:
MD or DO degree and graduation from an accredited medical residency in preventive medicine, family medicine/internal medicine, or pediatrics. If not a graduate of a preventive medicine residency, two (2) years of experience in public health. EIS experience is accepted.
A master's degree in public health or relevant degree can be substituted for the two (2) years of experience in public health.
Currently licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina or license to be received in the earliest timeframe as dictated by the state licensing board.

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Preferred Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of theory, principles, and practices of medicine with specialized knowledge in infectious diseases, epidemiology and public health.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with DHEC staff, medical practitioners, hospital staff, other professionals, and the general public.
Ability to present technical materials to a variety of audiences. Excellent oral, written and organizational skills.
Competency with routine office software and experience with statistical software.

This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control's Division of Acute Disease Epidemiology/Immunizations within the Bureau of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control. The work performed supports DHEC's mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Public Health created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Public Health to assume the public health-related functions of DHEC.
