WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

The Custom Crane Engineer is based at the Company's QMC Cranes operation in Sparks Nevada and is responsible for the launch and re-launch of new product development of standard and Custom Cranes.

 

A highlight of your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Prepare proposals and quotations for customers on new and retrofit cranes. Drive all precast and utility crane designs to standard platforms while identifying special requirements to review with customers. 
  • Assess new customer requirements against existing intellectual property to recommend the feasibility of re-using existing designs versus engineer to order.
  • Design custom-engineered cranes including the following considerations, material selection, system constraints analysis including structural design and tipping, hydraulic system design and sizing, electro-mechanical design, optimization of weight, balance, and lift considerations. Ensure compliance with all governing design regulations.
  • Create computer-aided design (CAD) models and drawings with proper GD&T for crane manufacture. Perform tolerance analysis to ensure the quality function of the crane given manufacturing process variability.
  • Create the Bill of Material (BOM) for purchasing and manufacturing teams while driving product quality for both our internal QMC manufacturing team and external supply base.
  • Support the manufacturing team to resolve any challenges during new crane builds while providing manufacturability solutions to simplify our manufacturing process and improve product quality.
  • Qualify and outsource to third-party engineering firms as demand exceeds capacity.
  • Compile and maintain appropriate documentation. Maintain design history file for each product we deliver. Deliver owner's safety documentation and labeling with new or modified cranes.
  • Support customer field issues by providing technical solutions to solve field problems and implement solutions to ensure the issue is resolved on all current and future builds.

 

 

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated history of success in custom mobile equipment engineering, specifically mobile cranes. Other desired qualifications include:

 

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering (Professional Engineer (PE) preferred).
  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years of experience in designing utility cranes.
  • Ability to work on complex problems independently and is adaptable to a broad range of engineering disciplines including strength of materials, structural analysis, hydraulic fluid mechanics, electro-mechanical engineering/design, and control systems.
  • High-level knowledge of crane design, rigging, and lifting.
  • Prior experience with Computer Aided Design with basic knowledge of drafting and GD&T protocols under any standard (ANSI, ASME, ISO).
  • Prior experience with metal design and taking new product development projects from concept to completion.
  • Experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor.
  • Structural design awareness - desired but not required.
