JOB SUMMARY

The Custodian / Groundskeeper is primarily responsible for maintaining the campus grounds. Other indoor custodial duties may be assigned according to the needs of the College.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Provides care and routine maintenance of grounds;
  • Clears storm drains and traps of debris;
  • Performs a variety of duties related to the job, such as painting, replacing light bulbs, hanging curtains, moving furniture, setting up chairs, tables, lights and podiums for special events and college functions;
  • Distributes and maintains materials, tools and equipment;
  • Delivers and picks up mail;
  • Assesses campus grounds for maintenance needs;
  • Follows planned designs to determine where to plan or lay sod;
  • Mows grass and trims weeds;
  • Weed exterior grounds using hands, tools, or weed killer, and clear debris from grounds;
  • Operates large power lawn mowers, edges, hand tools, and large vehicles associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities;
  • Plants seeds, bulbs, foliage and applies mulch for protection, using gardening tools;
  • Places pine straw; mulch beds around trees and buildings;
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides;
  • Treats grounds maintenance equipment;
  • Collects trash and debris for disposal;
  • Shovels and removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks, and entryways as required;
  • Assists in the maintenance of parking lots and other surfaces including asphalt repairs;
  • Provides preventive maintenance to grounds areas;
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms;
  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming;
  • Gather and empty trash to include parking lots, exterior trash receptacles, and interior trash receptacles;
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures;
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications;
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, or mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, or squeegees;
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems;
  • Requisition supplies or equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties;
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, or equipment;
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors;
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures;
  • Steam clean or shampoo carpets;
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, or supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks;
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing tasks such as locking doors after operating hours or checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created;
  • Clean laboratory equipment, such as glassware or metal instruments, using solvents, brushes, rags, or power cleaning equipment;
  • Set up, arrange, or remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, or scaffolding to prepare facilities for events, such as banquets or meetings.
  • Participates in assessment, planning, budgeting, and staff development;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
