JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Custodian/Grounds - Wawasee Middle School
TYPE OF POSITION: Classified - Year round position
REPORTS TO: Facilities Director or his/her designee
POSITION PURPOSE: To provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient outside facilities on which to play, learn, and develop. Secondary responsibilities are not limited to, but will include flexible hours for custodial cleaning at various buildings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Applies painted lines to all athletic fields at the high school complex. This will include layout of fields, cleanup of equipment, and maintenance of applicators.
- Applies seed, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers to various school sites per direction of supervisory personnel located at the Wawasee Transportation and Facilities Center. Must be able to perform calculations for the above named materials.
- Operates mechanical equipment of various types, which requires performing routine and preventative maintenance.
- Performs inspection and routine maintenance on playground equipment throughout the corporation.
- Performs lawn care activities throughout the growing season, which include but are not limited to mowing, edging, vacuuming, weeding shrub beds, and trimming trees and shrubs.
- Plows snow at Wawasee Transportation and Facilities Center and assists with snow removal at Wawasee High School. May be required, from time to time, to assist with snow removal at other school sites.
- Also during the non-growing season, this position will need to be flexible in start times to assist the high school with needed custodial services. When assigned to the high school, this employee will report to the head custodian. May be assigned to other schools on an as needed basis.
- During inclement weather days, maintain and organize the grounds/maintenance shop. Also, perform custodial duties inside the Wawasee Transportation and Facilities Center.
- Scheduling of personal vacation will not interfere with scheduled athletic activities.
- Performs other duties assigned by supervisory personnel from Wawasee Transportation and Facilities Center.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Prefer an individual with a certified pest control operator's license or a registered technician.
- Must have a valid Indiana driver's license.
- Must have an active home and/or cell phone.
- Ability to plan and organize.
- Skills in human relations.
- Demonstrates aptitude for general maintenance (i.e., electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry) and horticulture skills.
- Appropriate amount of successful ground service experience or equivalent.
- Other qualifications as deemed desirable by the School Board.

The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, workplace hazards (possibly of cuts, bruises, dirt, odors, etc.) and temperature variations if working outside.
