JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:Custodian

TYPE OF POSITION:Classified

REPORTS TO:Head Custodian, Director of Facilities, Assistant Principal, Principal, Director of Finance, Superintendent

POSITION PURPOSE:
To provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, work, play and develop.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.


  • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Performs painting duties as required.
  • Shovels, plows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.
  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Raises the United States flag at or before 8:00 A.M. each school day, and lower it at or after 3:30 P.M.
  • Sweeps classrooms daily and dust furniture
  • Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when conditions requires it.
  • Scrubs, wet mops and disinfect restroom floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
  • Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
  • Perform such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive manner.
  • Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  • Cleans all chalkboards at least once a week.
  • Makes such minor building repairs as he/she is capable of.
  • Reports major repairs needed promptly to the Head Custodian.
  • Maintains on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  • Reports immediately to the Head Custodian or Principal any damage to school property.
  • Remains on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance required by the principal (except during thirty (30) minute dinner break).
  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining before leaving that all door and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements from the Head Custodian far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian in his duties.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, waste, paints and fuels.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safe condition of the swimming pool, making all the necessary water tests, backwashing the filters, and refilling the pool as necessary.
  • Conducts periodic inspections and test of all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe condition.
  • Performs any necessary clean-ups as emergency may dictate.
  • Sweeps, mops, wet washes, and vacuums floors in assigned areas.
  • Assists in monitoring student discipline as appropriate.
  • Other duties assigned by the principal.


QUALIFICATIONS:


High School Diploma or Equivalent.


Ability to plan and organize.


Skills in human relations.


Demonstrates aptitude for cleaning, minor mechanical repair, and good work habits.


Other qualifications as deemed desirable by the School Board.


Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of School Trustees may find appropriate and approve.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.


While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, work place hazards (possibility of cuts, bruises dirt, odors, etc.) and temperature variations if working outside.

Length of year and rate of pay to be determined by the School Board.
