Job description

Duties

  • Sweep, dry mop, scrub, wax, and polish floors using brooms, mops, and light and heavy (i.e., industrial) powered scrubbers and buffers
  • Keep a stock of cleaning materials, restroom supplies, and equipment needed.
  • Perform seasonal tasks (e.g., applies salt/ice control material to entrances of buildings; shovels snow in immediate vicinity of building; picks up litter from area outside building; mows and waters lawns).
  • Responsible for grounds maintenance (e.g., mowing, edging, trimming shrubs and trees).
  • Perform light maintenance tasks for carpentry, masonry, and painting.
  • Operates a variety of government vehicles weighing up to 5 tons.
  • Maintain log book for vehicles in accordance with guidance from Transportation Motor Pool (TMP) and pertinent installation regulations.
  • Load and unloads trucks, vans, and other conveyances.
  • Move materials to proper locations using hand trucks or dollies, stacking and arranging materials.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Incumbent will have to pass a pre-employment physical to meet physical efforts requirements.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain a drivers license and be able to drive vehicles up to and including 5 tons (10,000 pounds).

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Custodial Worker (Laborer/Motor Vehicle Operator)~ without more than normal supervision. Able to perform normal duties in dusting, waxing, and cleaning furniture and fixtures. Duties in reporting work order to appropriate personnel for completion. Load and unload material to specified vehicles. Replace light bulbs and reset electricity safety switches - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort:
Custodial Worker: Must move and control heavy equipment, carry and set up ladders and scaffolding, and work from ladders and scaffolds. Frequently lifts and moves objects weighing approximately 40 pounds. Laborer: Performs work that requires light to moderate physical effort. Associated duties require stooping, bending, and climbing. Must lift and carry objects, frequently push wheelbarrows or carts, and carry, set up, and work from ladders. Frequently moves and lifts objects weighing approximately 60 pounds, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 60 pounds with assistance.
Motor Vehicle Worker: Work requires reaching and turning or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort may be required in making couplings between the vehicle and towed equipment when safety chains, tow bars, and hooks are lifted and properly secured. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.
  • Working Conditions:
Custodial Worker: Usually works indoors in areas that are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Exposure to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and with heavy powered equipment.
Laborer: Work is indoors and outdoors. When working outside, potential exposure to all kinds of weather conditions. Inside work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses. Frequent exposure to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt. Exposure to the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts, and scrapes. Follows safety procedures and uses standard safety equipment (e.g., gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes) to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
Motor Vehicle Work: Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather and on public roads. May be required to drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds on major highways/interstates. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents or when loading and unloading vehicles.
