We are hiring for a Custodial Operations Lead. At the Oregon Zoo, we believe in the power of a clean and well-maintained environment to enhance the visitor experience and support our mission. Work Week: Will vary based on zoo operations, events and coverage needs. At least one weekend day per week will be expected.
Shift: Projected to be a swing shift position, but actual shifts may vary based on zoo operations, events and coverage needs. It can be expected that shifts will provide daily overlap coverage between day and evening custodial shifts and may provide coverage during evening events and festivals.
As the Custodial Operations Lead you will:

  • Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor serves in a lead capacity. Lead duties typically include new employee orientation regarding work assignments, and supply/equipment locations and use; training and direction on work procedures and quality standards; following up on assignments; and providing input to the supervisor regarding team and individual performance.
  • Coordinate schedules and prioritizes duties and responsibilities; ensures coverage for breaks and absences. Monitors and reports hours worked, including tracking absences.
  • Provides training and direction on work assignments, procedures, equipment and quality/safety standards; tracks and keeps records of training. Assists with monitoring assignments to ensure completeness and quality; provides corrective guidance as needed. Communicates performance issues to supervisor.
  • In collaboration with the supervisor, facilitates requests for custodial assistance, which may include set-up and take- down for special events, assembling office furniture, and coordinating operations with security, maintenance and other departments.
  • Cleans bathrooms, exhibits, public and private spaces. Various project cleaning work including pressure washing, high dusting, deep cleaning exhibits and preparing areas to open to the public.
  • Operates and trains individuals in a variety of specialized equipment, such as floor scrubbing machines, carpet extractors, carpet shampooing equipment and high-speed floor polishers or other similar equipment.
  • Inspects and ensures all equipment, tools and supplies are cleaned, in working order, and returned to designated areas and prepared for next use. Ensures proper disposal of fluids, chemicals, equipment and packaging. Responds to facility and equipment problems and safety issues; arranges for repairs. Reports major issues to supervisor.
  • Audits custodial work of team and ensures work meets quality standards.
  • Maintains records, assembles information and/or documentation, and responds to email and voicemail. Responsible for upkeep of procedure manuals; makes suggestions for process improvements.
  • Coordinates the ordering and purchasing of materials, supplies and equipment, including surplus and proper storage.
  • Assists in building operation, maintenance and security-related needs, such as waste disposal and recycling issues, contracts, preventative maintenance and coordination with security.
  • Actively participates on committees and/or attends meetings as appropriate.
  • Assists with planning; identifies short-term and long-term projects or need for equipment, supplies and staffing.
  • Performs duties of the Custodian classification.

  • Exercise care in the use of cleaning materials and equipment for different types of building surfaces and in the operation of a variety of janitorial equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of safety and fire codes related to room setup.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. without assistance; occasionally up to 100 lbs. with a two-person lift.
  • Ability to use discretion with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to work; day, night shift, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

Minimum Requirements
  • Five years of custodial experience, including two years experience leading and directing employees or similar higher- level responsibilities, such as organization, record keeping, facilitating projects and overseeing employees
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the classification duties and responsibilities
Required
  • Valid driver's license
Additional Qualifications that must be obtained within 60 days of hire:
  • Blood Borne Pathogen Training
  • Emergency and Safety Procedures Training HAZMAT Awareness Level Training
  • Forklift Certification

Driving Record Check: The candidate selected for the position will need to pass a Driving Record check prior to being hired. Speeding tickets do not necessarily preclude employment and will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION

Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metro's internal equity review process, and the candidates' qualifications, the appointment will typically be made between $20.68 per hour to the equity range of $23.39 per hour. The full-salary range for this position is $20.68 - $26.37 per hour.
This position is eligible for overtime and is represented by Liuna 483 union. It is classified as an Operations Lead. Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and do not include the specific duties and responsibilities of the positions.
