Title: Cultural Resource Information Sharing Individual Placement  

Location: Based out of Washington, DC (may include remote service opportunities) 

Dates of Service: July 10th, 2023 - June 21st, 2024 (50 weeks) 

Pay: $570/week + health, vision and dental benefits 

Status: This is a full-time, temporary, 1700 hour AmeriCorps National Service position.

Appalachian Conservation Corps:  

Appalachian Conservation Corps(ACC)works to connectyoung peopleto critical conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio,Maryland, DC,and Pennsylvania.As a corps program,ACC partners with public land managers to identify, plan,and complete projects that improve public access, habitat quality,and economic development.ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation service organizations.Our programs focus onservice,place-based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility,and career development. ACC also provides an opportunity for members to learn about the local environment andissues affectingitandintroduces individuals to recreation and resource management careers.ACC welcomes national applicants, but also emphasizes the engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve. 

 

National Capital Region's Cultural Resource Management: 

The National Capital Region's Cultural Resource programs provide parks support in identifying, evaluating, preserving, protecting, and managing their varied Cultural Resources in the areas of: Archeology, Civil Rights History, Cultural Anthropology, Cultural Landscapes, Cultural Resource Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Cultural Resource Planning and Compliance, Historic Architecture, History, Museum Program, National Historic Landmarks Program, Network to Freedom Program, and Preservation Partnership Programs.  

 

Position Summary: 

Appalachian Conservation Corps and the National Capital Region are seeking a Cultural Resource Information Sharing Individual Placement to tell the many stories of the diverse communities that exist within the United States, past and present. 

This year long AmeriCorps position will work to provide Cultural Resource Management (CRM)-related support to the parks and partners in the National Capital Region through the development of reports and communications materials, fact sheets, web content and other media concerning National Park Cultural Resources topics that could range from archeology, anthropology, and history to historic architecture and cultural landscapes. Through their work, the intern will support the transfer of knowledge from historians and other Cultural Resource specialists to national park staff who rely on this information to make informed decisions about Cultural Resource care and broaden the park's storytelling. The position will work with Cultural Resource programs serving national parks in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and portions of West Virginia.  

The Individual Placement (IP) will primarily work on office-based assignments with the capacity to serve remotely under the mentorship and support of the NPS Staff. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Reading and supporting development of scholarly and research reports 
  • Distilling and summarizing large amounts of information 
  • Writing compelling prose to deliver important messages  
  • Highlighting engaging and relatable stories 
  • Improving access to digital information 
  • In addition, the IPs will be encouraged to attend NPS-sponsored trainings, and to take part in the activities of other resource programs

  • Eligibility for the Public Land Corps Hiring Authority upon successful completion - noncompetitive hiring status for two years when applying for federal positions.

  • Additional subject-specificcertifications and trainingsmay be offered  
  • Depending upon the academicinstitution and program,positions mayfulfill internship requirements 
  • Professional development opportunities(mentorship, resume support, alumnilistserv, etc.) and exposure to natural resource career paths 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Clear and engaging writing skills 
  • Students of history, anthropology, archeology, historic preservation, diverse cultures of the United States, journalism, communications, and other relevant fields are welcome 
  • Skill with Adobe suite products: Acrobat for editing and checking accessibility of PDFs, InDesign for desktop publishing, and Photoshop for photo editing. 
  • Familiarity with document and multimedia accessibility following Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (https://www.section508.gov/create/pdfs) 

General Qualifications:  

  • Be between the ages of18 and 30 (exception for Veterans up to age 35) 
  • Have US Citizenship or Legal Permanent Residency status 
  • Have a high school diploma or GED 
  • Pass background checks: all offers of positions are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and Federaland/or Statecriminal background check 
  • Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award(individualsare eligible if they have not already completed 2 full years of AmeriCorps service, or 4 AmeriCorps service terms, whichever comes first- please contact us if you are unsure of your eligibility) 
  • Possess a valid driver's license 
  • Comfortable working in an office environment
