Job Title: Cultural Peer Support Specialist Apprentice, AKP

Department: Alaska’s People

Reports To: Senior Manager, AKP

Supervises: None

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: PGM

Job Type: Part Time/Full-Time, Regular

General Functions:

The Cultural Peer Support Specialist Apprentice is responsible for being a peer role-model through lived experience in recovery and overall wellness by providing support and encouragement to Recovery Services (RS) participants.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Cultural Peer Support Specialist Apprentice:

  • Embody behavior and work ethic centered on CITC values (Respect, Interdependence, Accountability, Resilience, and Humor).
  • Provide professional, high level of customer service to all CITC staff, participants, vendors, and key stakeholders.
  • Display an eagerness to enhance knowledge and be willing to put forth an effort to further develop skills.
  • Actively participate in co-designing their development, identifying SMART goals and learning objectives.
  • Role-model wellness and recovery for participants.
  • Provide direct peer services, motivational interviewing, community living skills, social and emotional support to participants within Recovery Services programs to assist in regaining cultural identities, balance, and control of their lives.
  • Develop responsible and appropriate relationships with participants, referral sources, natural supports, and community partners.
  • Assist individuals in advocating for their overall wellness through goal setting, role modeling, and empowerment.
  • Implement de-escalation techniques that support individuals experiencing crisis situations.
  • Promote and assist with the participant’s self-directed recovery and cultural identity through cultural groups, meetings and individual sessions across the RS continuum.
  • Provide support to all Recovery Services programs, structures, policies, and philosophies.
  • Maintain appropriate training and certifications as outlined in RS policy and procedures and those designated by the supervisor.
  • Develop trauma informed techniques while engaging participants and assisting with the overall treatment.
  • Develop Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques while engaging participants and assisting with overall treatment.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations and procedures while displaying a professional disposition.
  • Actively work on state requirements for becoming a Peer Support Specialist and a Traditional Peer Support Specialist.
  • Maintain balance in your personal recovery and self-care techniques.
  • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

Job Responsibilities Related to Participant Privacy

  • Employee is expected to actively participate in CITC privacy training and to protect the privacy of participant information in accordance with CITC's privacy policies, procedures and practices, as required by federal and state law. Failure to comply with CITC's policies and procedures on participant privacy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
  • Employee may access protected health information and other participant information only to the extent necessary to complete job duties. Employee may only share such information on a need to know basis with others who have job responsibilities related to treatment, payment, or other CITC operations.
  • Employee is encouraged and expected to report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding CITC's policies and procedures on participant privacy and any observed practices in violation of the policy to the designated Privacy Officer.

Job Specifications:

  • Learn and understand CITC’s mission, vision, strategic focus areas including CITC’s ThriveAbility Plan and incorporate knowledge into daily activities.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to effectively present information and respond sensitively to questions from staff of CITC and their partners.
  • Good interpersonal and public contact skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff of CITC and affiliated company employees; exhibit a professional manner in dealing with others.
  • Good organizational skills; ability to think strategically, problem solve and exercise good judgment.
  • Work independently as well as on a team and with minimal supervision.
  • Work well under pressure and prioritize workload.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Reflect a high degree of sensitivity regarding confidential information.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

Cultural Peer Support Apprentice

  • Must be eligible for services through Alaska’s People.
  • Eighteen (18) years of age or older, and have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
  • Demonstrated lived experience with addiction recovery.
  • Graduate of CITC’s Recovery Services programs.
  • Ability to obtain NAADAC Peer Certification and/or approved State Peer Support Certification through Alaska Behavioral Health Certification Board within six (6) months of hire.

Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily works in an office setting, with extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.

Also included is the non-Native head of household members for Native families, which provides foster or traditionally adopted Native children.
