Mental Health Cooperative, Inc. (MHC) was formed in 1993 to serve individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. Since then, we have expanded our services to children and adolescents with severe emotional disorders across Middle and East Tennessee.
Our sole purpose is to support and treat those challenged with serious mental illness and poverty. Although based out of Nashville, we serve several communities across middle and East Tennessee with satellite offices in Antioch, Gallatin, Dickson, Columbia, Cleveland, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Cookeville, Chattanooga, and Memphis.

Job Title: Crisis Counselor, Child & Youth (Vanderbilt Children's Hospital Embedded)
Schedule: Monday-Thursday 11:30am-10:00pm
JOB SUMMARY: Provide face-to-face and telephone crisis intervention services in the least restrictive manner to people experiencing a mental health emergency.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct crisis assessment and crisis intervention services to appropriately address the needs of children & Youth consumers experiencing a psychiatric emergency.
  2. Clinically assess for the least restrictive alternative to meet the needs of the consumers experiencing a psychiatric emergency.
  3. When hospitalization is necessary, make appropriate referrals to facilities equipped to meet needs of the consumers.
  4. Make appropriate referrals to Diversion Services to ensure they have necessary clinical information.
  5. Actively participate in consult process with supervisory staff when dispositioning cares.
  6. Provide follow-up services as indicated in the policies and procedures and as set forth in Title 33.
  7. Develop individualized plans to meet needs of consumers in crisis.
  8. Respond to requests for face-to-face assessment in a timely manner.
  9. Maintain appropriate customer service skills at all times.
  10. Assist Triage Counselors in answering and dispositioning incoming calls as needed.
  11. Provide telephone counseling when needed.
  12. Maintain accurate clinical records and complete documentation within departmental guidelines.
  13. Coordinate services as needed with care management teams and provide consultation, as needed, with care management teams.
  14. Assist community agencies with information and/or dispositions.
  15. Educate community agencies as needed on crisis services as directed by supervisory staff.
  16. Assist teammates as needed.

Essential skills and experience:
  • A mental health professional with specialized training in crisis intervention with a minimum of a Master's degree in a related field (counseling, psychology or social work) or a Registered Nurse. At least 2 years experience working with children and adolescents required.

  • Ability to thoroughly and accurately explain and document assessment and recommended interventions/dispositions.
  • Solid working knowledge of the DSM diagnostic guidelines.

  • Utilizes less restrictive alternatives appropriately to address Consumer needs.
  • Ability to identify and utilize Consumers natural supports when available.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of community resources and ability to link individuals to appropriate resource.

Customer Service
  • Internal & external customer service indicative of mutual respect & trust Joint Commission Competencies:
  • Consumer Engagement - establishes and maintains a therapeutic relationship via effective, appropriate communication and behaviors with consumers.
  • Suicide Specific Crisis Assessments - use of C-SSRS and suicide specific assessment.
  • Appropriate Clinical Disposition for Crisis Assessments supported by clinically based rationale.
  • Professional and complete communication and coordination of care with Crisis Assessments.
  • Appropriate use of Therapeutic Options De-escalation and Restraint behavior.
  • Applies appropriate use of safe room and restraint procedures.
  • Actively participates in Crisis Assessment consultation process.
  • Responds to Crisis Triages within 2 hours.
  • Completes referral process to treatment.
  • Completes all clinical documentation in specified time periods.
  • Completes all Crisis Management System documentation in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently to make critical decisions and to work collaboratively as an integral part of a team.
  • Utilizes less restrictive alternatives appropriately to address Consumer needs.
  • Demonstrates evidenced informed practice related to substance use disorders
  • Demonstrates evidenced informed practice related to clinical care of children and youth.
