The Iowa Department of Public Safety's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is seeking a Criminal History Records Specialist (Clerk-Specialist) within the Criminal History Records Unit.
Organization Background:
The mission of DPS is to serve the people of Iowa by providing public safety services with leadership, integrity and professionalism through the core values of courtesy, service and protection. The Department is a statewide law enforcement agency and includes the Administrative Services Division, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Iowa State Fire Marshal and the Division of Intelligence. The Department works in conjunction with federal, state and local jurisdictions of the criminal justice community to provide for the safety of persons living in, or traveling through the State of Iowa.
Job Description:
As a Criminal History Records Specialist, you will be responsible for analyzing, maintaining, and updating Iowa Criminal History Records in the Criminal History Records database (CCH). You, along with three other Criminal History Records Specialists, will work closely with Iowa law enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), court system personnel, and Criminal History Auditors to ensure accurate, complete, and timely Criminal History Records are maintained. You will also be responsible for responding to public and law enforcement inquiries regarding Iowa Criminal History Records.
The accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of Criminal History Records has never been as important as it is now.
Responsibilities:

  • Utilize and cross reference multiple databases in order to maintain and update Iowa Criminal History Records
  • Communicate with Iowa law enforcement agencies, the FBI, court personnel, and Criminal History Auditors to obtain and verify Criminal History data
  • Respond to law enforcement and public inquiries about Iowa Criminal History Records in a professional and confidential manner
  • Perform quality control checks to ensure accuracy, completeness, and integrity of Iowa Criminal History Records
  • Assist with data analysis and reporting as needed

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work well independently as well as part of a team
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize and being comfortable with repetitive tasks
Other Information:
The selected candidate must have passed a thorough background investigation conducted by Iowa Department of Public Safety investigators before a final letter of employment offer is delivered.
The candidate must be NCIC certified or become NCIC certified within six months of hire.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience equal to three years of full-time clerical or closely related work;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency or satisfactory completion of a recognized correspondence or formal job-related training course at the high school or equivalent level such as that offered by WIN, OEO, CEP, CIVEC or similar programs, for one year only of the required experience;
OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting nine months or thirty semester hours coursework in an accredited business school, college or university for each year of the required experience;
OR

certification from the State of Iowa Administrative Assistant Certificate Program will substitute for six months of the required experience;
OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of eighteen months of full time experience as a resident treatment worker or Clerk–Advanced.
