Job description

The City of Naperville's Police Department seeks a motivated, detail-oriented individual to perform technical processing of Crime Scenes, document such activity in written reports and testify in court. This full-time, civilian position has a rotating day-off schedule (regular work days will include weekends and holidays) that includes day and afternoon shifts and is subject to 24-hour call-out. This is a union position.


Salary: $30.12/hour, per union contract (Staring rate for 2024)
The Crime Scene Technician will process Crime Scenes including: identifying, collecting, and preserving physical evidence; performing Crime Scene photography/videography; recovering latent prints and other physical evidence via the utilization of various chemicals, powders, light sources and casting materials in the field or in a lab environment; collecting digital video from various systems; preparing accurate reports pertaining to evidence, property, and Crime Scene activities; testifying in court regarding the processing of Crime Scenes; and providing educational opportunities by conducting training classes for police officers on Crime Scene awareness and providing related public safety education to community groups.

A Bachelor's degree in forensics or other police/science-related field and one year experience in the field OR an Associate's degree with three years' experience in the field is required. Completion of Level One Certified Crime Scene Investigator through the International Association of Identification (IAI) is required within two years of employment. Special consideration will be given to those applicants with law enforcement experience who have experience processing Crime Scenes. All candidates must possess a valid Illinois Class D driver's license and will be required to successfully pass a polygraph test as well as a post-offer drug screen.

Top candidates will have skills in utilizing and maintaining related instrumentation, photography and video equipment and computers, as well as experience in collection of digital video from various systems (business and homes) and converting proprietary videos and enhancement of video footage. Additionally, preferred candidates are those with knowledge in Crime Scene processing and legal issues pertaining to Crime Scenes and physical evidence. The ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with attorneys, police personnel, coroner's office, crime laboratory personnel, and the general public is required.
