Crime Scene Specialist III positions provide technical expertise in Crime Scene investigation and latent print processing in the Police Crime Laboratory; perform the most complex collection, photography, preservation, and documentation of evidence at Crime Scenes for police investigations; lead the work of professional laboratory personnel conducting Crime Scene analysis to preserve evidence for police investigations; ensures that the integrity of evidence has been maintained; assist in the execution of case priorities and work assignment schedules set by the unit supervisor; assist in training subordinates; writes complex and technical reports; and performs other duties as assigned.

- Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
- Crime Scene Specialist III positions are eligible for call-back pay.
- Crime Scene Specialist III employees may be required to stoop, bend, squat, reach, twist, climb and walk in various types of terrain.
EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options:
- Associate's Degree or higher in forensic or physical science.
- Certificate in forensic technology that includes college-level course work in fingerprint development, crime Scene investigation and forensic photography.
- Completion of a minimum of 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units that include coursework in fingerprint development, Crime Scene investigation and forensic photography.
- Additional qualifying experience may NOT be used to substitute for lack of the required education.
NOTES:
- One or more years of full-time professional experience as a Lab Technician performing processing in the Crime Scene unit with the City of San Diego may be substituted for a maximum of ONE year of the required experience.
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Certification as a Crime Scene Technician through the International Association for Identification (I.A.I.) or other accepted accrediting organization.
- Experience testifying as an expert in Crime Scene processing.
- Possession of a bachelor's degree or higher in a physical science.
- Strong communication skills.
- Technical lead experience in a crime laboratory setting.
- Proof of degree/transcripts, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
- Proof of transcripts showing completion of a certificate in forensic technology and required course work, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
- Proof of transcripts showing completion of the required semester/quarter units and course work, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
