As a Crime Analyst, you'll play a vital role in deciphering patterns, identifying trends, and providing actionable insights to shape strategic law enforcement decisions.
About the Position
The Crime Analyst position serves as the cornerstone of our Crime Analysis Unit, reporting directly to the Senior Crime Analyst. Your responsibilities will encompass a broad spectrum of analytical tasks, including tactical, intelligence, strategic, and administrative analysis. From aiding investigations to informing patrol strategies, your contributions will directly impact the safety and security of the City of Tacoma.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide tactical analysis to support operational and investigative efforts, pinpointing immediate crime concerns
  • Conduct strategic analysis to forecast long-term crime trends and inform future resource allocation
  • Perform administrative analysis, delving into economic, geographic, and social factors shaping criminal activity
  • Collect, interpret, and analyze data from diverse sources to uncover crime series, trends, and patterns
  • Develop comprehensive reports, presentations, and visual aids to communicate findings effectively
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies and community groups
  • Offer expertise in interpreting crime statistics and provide training to enhance understanding
  • Stay abreast of technological advancements, contributing to the development of innovative analytical tools.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college with emphasis in math, statistics, criminal justice, behavioral science, or related field AND one to two (1-2) years of related work experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Formal training or certification from a recognized Crime Analyst program.
Note: Related work experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Individuals will need to pass a thorough background check which includes driving record, credit history, conviction/arrest record, work history, reference check, medical screening, and polygraph.

Knowledge & Skills
Technical Knowledge
  • Modern quantitative research methods including research design, statistical analysis, frequency distribution, association matrices and link analysis.
  • Computer software programs including spreadsheets, database, word processing, graphics, presentations, GIS mapping and data mining.
  • Spatial visualization and analytics as well as predictive analysis utilizing ESRI products.
  • FBI uniform crime reporting and national incident-based reporting requirements.
Ability to:
  • Understand the general operation of a law enforcement agency and the basics of the criminal justice system.
  • Extract information from a variety of databases and data warehouse connections using database language (e.g. SQL).
  • Read and understand police reports.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Use data and information in a clear and rational process to assess and understand issues, evaluate options, form accurate conclusions, and make decisions.
  • Gather, assemble, analyze, and evaluate facts to draw logical conclusions, make proper recommendations, and prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive written reports which require displaying and presenting statistical, graphical, and other reporting methods to audiences of varying technical sophistication.
  • Perform advanced statistical research and analysis.
  • Use judgment and knowledge to determine appropriate array of data, analysis, and statistical methods suitable for project needs.
  • Perform statistical research and analysis.
  • Effectively identify, collect, organize, and document data and information in ways that make the information most useful for subsequent assessment, analysis, and investigation.

Examination Process
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to complete an online assessment. Candidates who pass the assessment will be placed on an eligibility list for interview and hiring consideration. The eligibility list will be used to fill vacancies as they occur for approximately one year.
Applicants who are eligible for Veteran's Preference scoring criteria must attach a copy of their DD-214 member copy 4, (proof of military discharge form) at time of application, to be eligible for review for Veteran's Preference points, with redacted birth date and social security numbers.
This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local 117. New employees must successfully complete a twelve-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification. Appointment is subject to passing a background check. For positions with the Tacoma Police Department and in support of Municipal Court staff, candidates must pass a Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS) background check and be able to maintain CJIS certification.
