Essential Functions:

The Courtroom Clerk performs experienced clerical work within a courtroom, including providing support to judges and magistrates while in the courtroom, operating the recording system, and entering the judge?s findings in the case management system for Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. The incumbent prepares paperwork for signatures, administers appropriate oaths, and logs and secures exhibits. Other duties are to assist in jury selection process, prepare orders and complete hearing sheets as needed.

Assists in jury selection process by taking roll call of all jurors, recording number of strikes taken by each attorney, and maintaining list of jurors selected. Communicates with Jury Commissioner and assignment office as necessary.

Keeps accurate record of witnesses, names, addresses, evidence/exhibits, and other materials.

Records proceedings of court activity on hearing sheets in clear, concise, legible manner to be used for permanent docket. (Notes taken by hand in courtroom and typed using computer keyboard to permanent hearing sheet later). Administers appropriate oaths.

Generates necessary paperwork and obtains signatures from the appropriate parties. Coordinates courtroom activities with respective departments.

Calculates and totals court costs and fees to be billed to the correct parties.

Education:

High School diploma (or GED equivalent).

Experience:

Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.

Note:

A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.

A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work

experience.

A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.

Knowledge of:

Court forms, practices, procedures, protocols, systems, and equipment required to support the specialized work of the assigned unit(s).

Legal terminology and court procedures.

Judicial policies, procedures, and forms.

Jury selection procedures.

Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Skill in:

Operation of recording equipment, computer terminals, and related software.

Typing on a personal computer.

Managing priorities to meet critical deadlines while multitasking.

Ability to:

Acquire knowledge of Maryland Judiciary procedures, MD Annotated Code, MD Rules, Attorney Generals Opinions, Various software manuals, and Personnel Policies and Procedure Manual.

Apply job-related terminologies, codes, policies, procedures, rules, regulations and laws as required.

Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.

Complete duties and responsibilities in a helpful manner understanding and displaying a service minded approach to customers and coworkers.

Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Set priorities and simultaneously process multiple duties and responsibilities.

Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Type net 35 wpm.

Handle sensitive or difficult situations requiring discretion and confidentiality.

Understand and carry out complex verbal and written instructions, comments, and notations.
