Job description

Under the general supervision of the Administrative Services Commander or designee responsible for security of the County Courthouse while working in the capacity of Court Security Officer. This position will be selected at the discretion of the Sheriff.

**Applications are accepted until there are sufficient numbers of qualified applications or qualified candidate has been identified. The position could possibly close at any time.**

  1. Responsible for watching individuals entering the County Courthouse building to insure the safety to those inside including workers and those who are here on other matters.
  2. Making security checks of the courthouse and its perimeter on foot for contraband and weapons.
  3. Directing people through the people mover and having them place objects in containers and on the belt for inspection.
  4. Stand and monitor the x-ray machine to look for weapons.
  5. Standing and observing the Magnetometer, walking over to where the individual is, when necessary; and use a handheld scanner on the individual. This is subject to what part of the body the Magnetometer declared an alarm in and may involve bending and wanding.
  6. Switching positions from x-ray operator to Magnetometer operator on 1-hour intervals to avoid excess exposure to the x-ray machine.
  7. Assisting deputies with an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints.
  8. Qualifying at the range from positions which include: standing, kneeling, and prone.
  9. Must be able to work all hours when necessary including mornings, afternoons, and evening meetings; occasionally upon short notice.
  10. Including Central Dispatch what the issue might be.
  11. Communicate verbally and effectively by listening to people and by giving information, directions, and commands.
  12. Load, unload, aim and fire handguns, shotguns, rifles, and other agency firearms from a variety of body positions in situations that justify the use of deadly force while maintaining emotional control under extreme stress.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  1. Other duties as directed by a higher authority.

Experience: Prior experience as a law enforcement officer is desirable but not required.
Possess normal hearing.
Height and weight in relation to each other as indicated by accepted medical standards.
Be free from an impediment of the senses, physically sound, and in possession of extremities.
Possess normal color vision.
Possess 20/20 corrected vision in each eye.

Seeing: The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. The important aspects of vision are:
  1. Acuity, far - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.
  2. Acuity, near - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
  3. Depth Perception - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
  4. Field of Vision - Area that can be seen up and down or to right and left while eyes are fixed on a given point.
  5. Accommodation - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near-point work at varying distances from eye.
  6. Color Vision - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  7. Worker must have the ability to perform the essential functions of the job at night as well as during the day and specifically must be free from a condition commonly referred to as "night blindness."
Working Conditions: The worker is subject to activities which occur inside most of the time but occasionally are outdoors when doing searches of the building grounds.
Hazards: Conditions or situations in which there is danger to life, health, or bodily injury. This category includes a variety of physical hazards, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to burns and radiant energy, exposure to all types of explosives, and exposure to toxic chemicals and biological agents.
