Job description

The Bedford County Court Administration Office is currently seeking a Court Recorder. This is a full-time position, with benefits including: Comprehensive Medical Plans, Vision, Dental, Retirement, Paid Time Off and Life Insurance.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

To capture and manage the court record using digital technology; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF POSITION: An employee in this class is responsible for the recording of testimony at legal proceedings. The employee is expected to prepare a complete and accurate record of such proceedings. Work assignments are made by the Court Administrator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Illustrative Only)

1. Maintains digital recording equipment; conducts checks of system on a daily basis to ensure proper functioning regarding FTR Reporter and FTR Player.

2. Records testimony during all types of court proceedings using digital technology; interrupts when necessary to ensure accuracy and completeness of record; plays back portions of proceedings if requested; and marks important events by creating quick notes and inserting time stamps during proceedings.

3. Maintains recording and records of proceedings electronically.

4. Maintains Log Notes of all speakers and events during court proceedings in which digital recording is in use. Notes all occurrences such as unusual terms, names, objections, and cross examinations. Determines correct spelling of names, terminology, and other specifics of court record to ensure accuracy for when transcripts are requested.

5. Preparation of Court Orders or other documents if/as directed by presiding judge.

6. Files, indexes, answers correspondence and perform various typing assignments.

7. Complies with all court regulations and orders and maintains the highest ethical standards required by the Code of Conduct for employees of The Unified Judicial System.

8. The Court Recorder assigned to Family Court coordinates with Judicial Staff to ensure coverage for the responsibility of entering PFA orders into the PFAD system.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of English usage, punctuation, spelling and varied technical terminology; some knowledge of the conduct of legal proceedings; skill in taking and transcribing verbatim dictation for sustained periods of time, received at rapid and changing speeds and inflections from several persons. Qualifies and maintains at least the minimum standards of proficiency required under The Pennsylvania Rules of Judicial Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent, plus 1-2 years clerical experience in a judicial, administrative, legal, or governmental environment or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position. Requires an understanding of recording equipment, or ability to quickly develop an understanding of recording equipment, and the ability to correct routine malfunctions. Computer skills required.

SPECIAL NEEDS:

Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to travel if required to attend meetings and seminars.
