Under the direction of the Manager/Charge Nurse in the Emergency Room, the Paramedic/EMT follows assigned duties. Provides urgent/emergent routine care to prisoners and staff as needed. Maintains MDOC Custody/Security needs. Follows MDOC policies and procedures, and is compliant with JCAHO standards, ACA standards and Hospital Policies, Procedures and Protocols. Provides teaching for less clinically skilled staff members. Abides by Civil Service Work Rules. The Paramedic/EMT is expected to exercise considerable judgment in selecting the most appropriate course of action for emergent, life threatening situations. The CMUO at this level must be proficient in IV insertions, blood draws and provide appropriate BCLS/ACLS interventions as needed. The employee may be hired for a specific area, but on occasion, may be held responsible to move to any inpatient setting within the complex or facility. Works 100% of the time within the secured perimeter of the prison.

Education
Completion of 15 semester (23 term) credits in one or a combination of the following areas: correctional administration, criminal justice, criminology, psychology, educational psychology, social work, sociology, counseling and guidance, family relations, pastoral counseling, or law enforcement.
ExperienceTwo years of experience equivalent to a Corrections Medical Aide or Corrections Officer, including one year equivalent to a Corrections Medical Aide E9 or Corrections Officer E9.
Satisfactory completion of annual re-certification and training.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.
