U nder the general supervision of the Principal or Academic Vice-Principal, the Literacy Teacher (LT,) an academic credentialed teacher, provides both instruction and supervision to inmate Literacy Mentors (LM) participating in the Peer Literacy Mentor Program (PLMP,) inclusive of how to teach and support reading remediation of adult learners following the College and Career Readiness Standards in preparing Literacy Students (LS) for a High School Diploma (HSD) or High School Equivalency (HSE.) The PLMP will expand inmates' access to quality educational literacy services and literacy progress monitoring. The LT will coordinate and facilitate literacy services for inmates through use of the Department's approved and authorized literacy program(s) and instructional materials.
The LT is responsible for recruiting and selecting LMs from among the inmate population. The LT is also responsible for providing training and guidance in the delivery of literacy instruction and support using a variety of instructional methods; monitoring LM attendance; monitoring the delivery of literacy instruction to Literacy Students by monitoring LS attendance and participation with input from the LMs and Community Resource Manager (CRM;) monitoring individual LS literacy progress by regularly collecting formative assessment results administered by the LMs. The LT is also responsible for completing Education Progress Reports, Curriculum Progress Records, and Informational Chronos for LMs.
The LT is responsible for overseeing inmate Literacy Mentors who provide individualized and small group literacy instruction to other inmates. Using CDCR's approved training curriculum, the LT is responsible for the planning, organization, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of evidenced-based literacy instruction. The LT will develop and maintain a positive and professional relationship with librarians, media specialist, teachers, administrators, inmates, and other department staff. The LT will follow the guidelines based on the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and Office of Correctional Education Operational Policies and Procedures and be cognizant of the institutional mission and services. The LT will preserve personal safety by wearing a Personal Alarm Device or other CDCR-sanctioned security device

**Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. **Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
Pursuant to the Public Health Orders ( Guidance for the Use of Face Coverings and State and Local Correctional Facilities and Detention Centers Health Care Worker Vaccination Requirement ) issued by the California Department of Public Health and the directive Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccines and Testing for Institution Staff issued by the Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR), all staff assigned to this post/position may be required to show evidence of full vaccination and booster for COVID-19, absent an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation precluding them from vaccination.
