Works with the Director of Conservation Education and Engagement to create engaging experiences that inspire conservation action. This includes developing and implementing school programs and other community-based programming, managing adult and teen volunteer activities, as well as supporting the CEED team in all programs and activities, on- and off-site.
Responsibilities- Develops and implements school-based programming, both on- and off-site.
- Collaborates with community organizations to develop mutually beneficial partnerships.
- Manages and coordinates the OWLs (teen volunteers) program, the Kids' Discovery Field Station activities, and provides support to all other CEED programs and activities.
- Manages the Adult Volunteer program with support from the Director of Conservation Education and Engagement.
- Develops and teaches programs, tours, workshops, presentations, and other programmatic activities for a variety of audiences on and off-site.
- Collaborates with the CEED team to align programs and activities to spiraling curriculum and ensures programs are developmentally appropriate.
- Ensures programs and activities meet conservation behavioral outcomes.
- In conjunction with the Director of CEED, evaluates programs, makes recommendations, and implements changes accordingly.
- Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises volunteers and seasonal staff.
- Works with the marketing and communications teams to advertise The Wilds' education programs and develop promotional materials as necessary.
- Oversees communication with program registrants.
- Assures safety of self, staff, animals, and guests through regular participation in safety training and activities; compliance with standard operating procedures; and, proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Works with the Facilities team to ensure development and maintenance of education trails and other land management projects, as well as coordinates maintenance of facilities, vehicles, equipment, etc.
- Acts as a representative of The Wilds including appropriate dress, language, and attitude in all activities providing a positive example to all staff.
- Maintains confidential records related to program participation and billing.
- Constantly strives to further the mission of the organization and avidly supports the Columbus Zoo Family of Parks.
- Establishes diversity, equity, access, and inclusion as a priority in all programs and activities.
- Implements sustainable practices in daily tasks whenever possible.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in education, conservation, biology, or a related field required.
- Minimum three years of experience in education programs preferred.
- Minimum three years of experience in volunteer administration preferred.
- Knowledge of education program development required.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs preferred.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude in sometimes stressful situations required.
- Knowledge of natural ecosystems, native wildlife, and conservation issues preferred.
- Lifeguard certification preferred.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification required.
- High level of motivation and enthusiasm.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail preferred.
- Comfortable in moving water, able to hike long distances, and willing to supervise and participate in outdoor recreational activities required.
- Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays required.
- Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing required.
- Ability to plan and organize work in an efficient and cost-effective manner and without direct supervision required.
- Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. standards required.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Wilds/Zoo team members and contacts regarding company business required.
- Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols required.
- Possession of a valid Ohio motor vehicle operator's license and a good driving record required.
- Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment employment drug screening required.
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually required.
