Job Summary
The AKSD Interpreter Services Coordinator provides coordination and supervision of all services related to communication access at the Alaska State School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The position coordinates all activities related to educational interpreting, teaching assistance, sign communication proficiency evaluations of AKSD staff, educational interpreter performance assessments, and distance learning opportunities for educational interpreters on a statewide basis. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
  2. A SCPI rating of advance plus within one year of employment.
  3. A minimum of one year administrative or supervision experience.
  4. Fluency in American Sign Language and both spoken and written English.
  5. A valid Alaska driver's license.

The following are preferred:
  1. A master's degree in education or a closely related field.
  2. Ability to produce well written technical documents.
  3. Ability to work with contractors and contract administrators/agencies.
  4. Ability to evaluate educational interpreting skills.
  5. Ability to evaluate ASL Communication Proficiency using SCPI format.
  6. Ability to operate TTY, pagers, computers, and office equipment.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Coordinates provision of educational interpreting services required by students and staff so that information is accessible to all participants in the classroom, at extracurricular activities, in meetings, and at training sites.
  2. Develops and oversees contracts and payments for the provision of interpreting services with private vendors.
  3. Assigns interpreting and teaching assistant duties.
  4. Addresses daily needs for substitute educational interpreters and teaching assistants.
  5. Advertises, recruits, and interviews applicants and recommends hiring for educational interpreting and teaching assistant vacancies.
  6. Provides ongoing supervision, goal setting, annual evaluations, training opportunities, and skill development for educational interpreters and teaching assistants.
  7. Oversees acquisitions for AKSD video and library resources.
  8. Coordinates provision of Sign Communication Proficiency Interviews and ratings for all new staff annually and for others on as needed basis.
  9. Provides liaison with Northern Colorado University, Greeley Educational Interpreter Certification Program for the provision of distance learning training for educational interpreters across the state of Alaska.
  10. Provides liaison with regional Assessment Services ASK12 at the University of Arizona, Tucson for educational interpreters to assist the Department of Education and Early Development with necessary information on national assessment strategies for educational interpreters.
  11. Maintains Alaska statewide database of interpreters and EIPA scores.
  12. Holds confidential information related to students and personnel per state laws.
  13. Maintains positive, effective working relationships with AKSD staff, ASD staff, administrative personnel, parents, students and the general public.
  14. Provides daily supervision of all educational interpreters and teaching assistants, who work at AKSD.
  15. Oversees expenditures for all freelance/contract interpreters and other consultants, providing services to AKSD, as assigned.
  16. Participates as a member of interviewing teams, IEP teams, and other administrative committees as assigned.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
