Lake County Public Works is a sewer and water provider to 40% of Lake County residents and owns, operates, and maintains more than 750 miles of pipe, three water reclamation facilities, more than 100 pump stations, an excess flow facility and a 1-mile-long levee. This Controls Technician position involves maintenance and updates for electrical control systems and equipment and Supervisory Controls and Data Acquisition (SCADA) master plans, ranging from the design and programming of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's) to SCADA equipment.
Essential Functions
- Program Allen Bradley PLC's utilizing RSLogix 500 and RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000 programming software.
- Plan system wide SCADA applications including Inductive Automation Ignition, Rockwell FactoryTalk View, Wonderware InTouch, etc.
- Configuration of SCADA Historians and SQL based databases such as Microsoft SQL, MySQL, etc.
- Improve system communication protocols, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP Modbus RTU, remote alarms and WIN911.
- Develop system network design, including fiber optic and wireless communication systems (radio/cellular).
- Work with staff to interpret control panel wiring drawings and control schematics.
- Establish a plan to replace in-house systems with off-the-shelf solutions, i.e., JULIE software, OPS.net, engineering.net, etc.
- Troubleshoot server needs and improve efficiency and performance with GIS, SCADA, etc.
- Application of IT security standards and best practices.
- Support on-call schedule when required.
- Review communication of regulatory requirements.
- Coordination with County IT on cyber security.
Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required
- Working knowledge of industry standard SCADA applications and standard practices, tools, and terminology of the electrical trade and elementary electrical theory and use of testing equipment.
Education and/or Other Requirements:
- Associate degree or equivalent of two years of college or vocational school in electrical engineering, IT, or computer science; or
- Five years of experience in working with controls, including programming Allen Bradley Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) utilizing RSLogix 500 and RSLogix 5000/Studio 5000 programming software.

Physical Requirements:
- Medium to heavy work involving exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a frequent basis and exceptional dexterity and skill in operating machinery, tools, or office equipment.
