Position Summary
Work is fulltime during the summer and part time during school. Normal hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with some flexible scheduling available. Overtime work hours may extend to 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Part-time work hours are approximately 10 hours per week during fall and spring semesters, fulltime during winter break. Returning for subsequent summers may be an option.

GENERAL SUMMARY: The OSHA construction management intern will assist in the production of an OSHA compliant, written City of Dubuque Construction Safety Program under the direct supervision of the Project Manager; The Construction Safety Program Manual will be used by all city employees and hired contractors. The Construction Safety program manual will encompass all construction work activities typically encountered on a City building or roadway construction project. The manual will provide workers with practical direction on how to comply with 29 CFR 1926, OSHA's construction industry regulations. Work involves organizing content and drafting language for the manual; researching applicable industry safety regulations; coordinate reviews of draft manual language with other City departments and safety consultants; and perform other duties as assigned. Work is reviewed by a supervisor through conferences and results achieved.

Job Duties
  • Draft safety written programs.
  • Act as an assistant project manager helping safety teams at the city by facilitating collaboration, communication, maintaining focus on critical path items, and ensuring projects stay on schedule.
  • Review construction bid documents and contracts and coordinate updates to safety language as needed.
  • Research national best practices related to Construction Safety.
  • Work with the city's safety consultants to coordinate reviews and updates to existing city safety programs.
  • Create project specifications and technical reports.
  • Utilize electronic filing for project documentation.
  • Inspect construction sites to observe safety compliance practices.
  • Coordinate regulatory compliance activities.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • College student enrolled in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Sophomore or higher-level college student enrolled in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Experience working in the occupational safety or construction industry.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and automobile insurance coverage consistent with the City's requirements.
