Our client is a growing, financially-stable, prime General Contractor and Construction Management company headquartered in the Chicago-area. Our client’s focus is Commercial Construction work for Municipal and Federal Government clients.
We are currently seeking a qualified Construction Project Engineer to join their team of Construction professionals. The role will work onsite at the Construction Project site in Marion, IL through December 2023 and will have an opportunity to continue employment as a Construction Project Engineer in the Chicago area after the the conclusion of the Marion, IL project.
As part of the field construction team, the Construction Project Engineer assists the Construction Project Manager and Construction Project Superintendent with project documentation and control, job cost accounting, scheduling, and construction supervision efforts. The position interfaces with subcontractors and material suppliers to ensure that all required project activities remain on track through completion.
The ideal candidate has 3+ years of experience as a Project Engineer with a Commercial General Contractor working on Construction Projects in the $5M-$10M+ range. The successful Construction Project Engineer must possess excellent technical and communication skills, has strong attention to detail, can perform a wide variety of construction-related tasks, can effectively prioritize tasks and see them through to completion and be able to effectively work professionally as a member of a close-knit team.
For qualified Chicago-area candidates who are not local to Marion, IL, the company will cover local weekly housing, provide a daily per diem and cover roundtrip gas expense cost commuting home every other week during the duration of the project.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Interact with and maintain good working relationships with project manager, project superintendent, architect, subcontractors, material suppliers and all members of the project team. Communicate with team members to resolve any concerns or issues.
- Ensure project plan is moving forward to meet anticipated deadlines. Consolidate and track permits, drawings and documents to keep projects organized and on schedule. Maintain project documents, change management documents and project cost control documents.
- Develop, review and maintain RFI and submittal process documents and obtain clarification on any outstanding questions.
- Develop and maintain Construction Project schedules.
- Assist Project Manager and Superintendent with pre-construction activities.
- Conduct coordination, pre-installation, pre-construction, and subcontractor coordination meetings.
- Coordinate Owner/Architect/Contractor (OAC) and other project update meetings.
- Monitor and ensure project quality.
- Manage project closeout.
- Edit documents using MS Office, Adobe and Bluebeam as required.
- Assist with managing project subcontractors and material suppliers. Build and maintain relationships with key suppliers and subcontractors.
- Perform project field support to include site supervision and quality control, as needed.
- Maintain quality and ethical standards.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture or a closely related field.
- 2 + years of relevant construction experience working for a commercial general contractor as a Project Coordinator, Project Engineer, Field Engineer, Assistant Project Manager or Project Manager on larger projects in the $5M-$10M+ range. Prior field construction experience a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively interface, communicate and build relationships with team members and all levels of management on an ongoing basis and work as a trusted construction professional.
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must be able to establish and maintain relationships with, communicate and manage subcontractors and material suppliers on an ongoing basis.
- Ability to read and understand project specifications and drawings and understand project scheduling and cost control.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook), AutoCad, Adobe, scheduling software, BlueBeam and/or Procore.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, coordinate, organize, schedule, prioritize and manage multiple tasks to follow-through and meet deadlines. Excellent time management skills

TEAM RESPONSIBILITY:
The position supports, and is accountable to, the company’s Project Manager and Project Superintendent. Responsible for guiding and mentoring junior colleagues, team members, subcontractors and material suppliers.
POSITION LOCATION AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
Field based role onsite at the project construction site in Marion, IL. Candidate must be able to travel periodically, as required. Must possess a reliable insured vehicle, a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
RELOCATION ELIGIBILITY:
For qualified Chicago-area candidates who are not local to Marion, IL, the company will cover local weekly housing, provide a daily per diem and cover roundtrip gas expense cost commuting home every other week during the duration of the project.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS INFORMATION:
- Base Salary Range: $55,000 - $65,000 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
