Construction Materials Laboratory Technician

We are currently seeking a seasonal Construction Materials Laboratory Technician to join our Construction Services team in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina between December 2023 to January 2024.


Job Snapshot:

As a Construction Materials Laboratory Technician, you will be a part of a team to ensure the safety and quality of construction projects by conducting tests on materials and providing valuable data to construction professionals.

  • Laboratory testing of construction-related materials including soil, concrete, aggregate, rock, masonry, and asphalt as well as testing for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, ISO and/or project specifications
  • Review of project-specific plans and specifications in preparation for laboratory testing and field observations on construction sites
  • Daily use of Metafield®, and/or other field and laboratory information management systems, for recording of testing results
  • Communication of field and laboratory testing results with Construction Services Project Management staff, contractors, and clients
  • Calibration of field and laboratory equipment to industry codes and standards
  • Field testing and reporting on construction projects of soil, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and masonry mortar/grout

Complete transparency, working outside (most of the time) isn't for everyone, and some projects are more spectacular than others. While the primary responsibilities of this position are performed in the lab, testing, and observations on construction projects may be required, based on workload and project needs.


Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • Proficiently complete data entry into multiple software applications on a smart device, using Microsoft Office and email
  • Effective math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Construction Materials testing
  • Experience with ASTM, AASHTO, or ISO standards

One or More Active Certification(s) Preferred:

  • American Concrete Institute (ACI)
    • Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician; Aggregate Testing.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough and uneven terrain
  • Standing up to 8 hours a day, up to 12 hours on occasion
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
  • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
