The Lynchburg District is seeking to fill a senior Construction Inspector. The position will ensure roadway, structure and bridge, and maintenance construction activities are performed in accordance with contracts, plans and applicable documents to include environmental, erosion and sediment control, safety, traffic control, EEO and DBE guidelines, regulations and permits. Will ensure project contract compliance and quality requirements are met, as well as oversee and perform materials testing to ensure projects are constructed to design quality standards. Will ensure work zones are properly established and maintained, monitor project schedules through progress meetings, and review and maintain project budgets. Position will track and maintain materials documentation for projects, maintain project files and compile daily reports of project activities. Will communicate with VDOT and external support staff and customers, manage project public relations and respond to public concerns. Additional positions may be filled throughout the Lynchburg District's 10-county area within 90 days of the closing date.
In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience with construction methods, materials, equipment, standards, specifications and terminology. Experience applying state and federal safety, environmental, and EEO/DBE guidelines and regulations related to transportation construction. Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry and demonstrated ability to apply mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments to construction plans. Ability to read and maintain detailed project documentation and prepare reports, forms and correspondence. Ability to work independently and oversee and provide technical guidance and training to other inspectors. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with VDOT and contractor personnel and the general public. Skill in the use of engineering and testing equipment, as well as computers and software applications.
Additional Considerations
Experience in a broad range of road and bridge construction inspection activities with a DOT or a DOT consultant inspection firm. Proficiency in MS Office and Site Manager or other project management software. Experience overseeing the work of others. Current certifications in soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, nuclear safety and transportation, guardrail installation, pavement markings, work zone safety, storm water inspection, and erosion and sediment control.
