Job description

Job Purpose and Primary Objectives:

Benchmark Space Systems is seeking a Configuration Manager to help us define the new space ecosystem. Applicants should be comfortable working on a small team supporting multiple fast-paced projects. This role works closely with engineering and production groups across the company including mechanical, electrical, software, program management, production, and testing on documentation management.

The ideal candidate is someone who is interested in the commercial space industry and excels in technical documentation management tasks including writing, editing, data management, and overseeing company configuration control policies. Depending on interest and background, there is also an opportunity to support project systems engineering work such as requirements management and verification activities.

This role is on-site in our Burlington, Vermont location.

About Benchmark:

Benchmark designs and produces propulsion systems that maneuver small satellites between low earth orbit and the moon. These systems utilize non-toxic propellants to provide thrust to transfer to a specific orbit, maintain position, avoid collisions, and a range of other applications. These capabilities enable activities such as on-orbit refueling, in-space manufacturing, re-entry, and more. Measurements of Success/Primary Job Responsibilities:

At its core, Benchmark is an entrepreneurial, fast paced organization. In this environment, we need all employees to problem solve, not be afraid to ask questions, and be able to work with and help colleagues in different departments and positions by digging in and working on other tasks as needed/assigned depending on business needs. With that said, there are primary job responsibilities and measurements of success for this position, which are:

  • Lead oversight of company configuration management workflows and policies.
  • Lead management of continuous maintenance and updates to company technical standards and operations policies.
  • Work with company leadership and Lead System Engineers to help author, review, and release cross-discipline technical documentation.
  • Work with the Chief Engineer to manage activities such as failure investigations, technical requirement waivers, technical reviews, and issuing technical memos.
  • Support internal database development efforts related to documentation storage, test data compilation, and configuration management.
  • Document meeting minutes and technical authority decisions affecting company operations.
  • Support Lead System Engineers in efforts related to producing project technical document deliverables.
  • Support Lead System Engineers in efforts related to project requirements management and verification.

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS degree in Engineering or another relevant STEM field.
  • 3 years of professional experience working in Engineering or another relevant STEM field.
  • Experience in database management.
  • Experience in writing technical documentation such as reports, specifications, requirements, and/or scientific publications.
  • Experience in reviewing and editing technical documentation.
  • Experience in helping to coordinate logistics in a technical organization.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work on ITAR (export-restricted) technologies (US Persons and previously authorized applicants only. BSS cannot sponsor a new ITAR authorization application)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

What you bring to the position, or have the ability to swiftly learn and be successful in:

  • Collaborating with company leadership and technical subject matter experts to facilitate creation, review, and release of technical standards, processes, and reports.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings, diagrams, schematics, and manuals.
  • Ability to take ownership and maintenance of internal configuration management database tools.

What makes you stand out:

  • 5+ years of professional experience working in the aerospace industry.
  • Familiarity with configuration management practices utilized in the aerospace industry.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering methodologies, including but not limited to, failure modes and effects analysis, requirements management, verification & validation, and root cause analysis.
  • Familiarity with in-space chemical propulsion system design and operation.
