COMPUTER SCIENCE TEACHER at a small, innovative charter High School in East Oakland
OAKLAND UNITY HIGH SCHOOL (Unity) was founded in 2003 as an independent charter High School open to all students in Oakland. The mission of Unity is to prepare its students for admission to and success in college and career. Since opening, Unity has established itself as a high impact urban High School, ranking among the top 10% of California public charter schools. Unity has consistently earned Gold Medal ranking (among the top 50 California High Schools) from U.S. News and World Report and earned repeat recognition from Innovate Public Schools as one of the most effective of the Bay Area schools targeting students from low-income families.
Unity is a small school with high expectations and a safe and nurturing environment for teaching and learning. The school annually enrolls approximately 360 students in grades 9-12. Over 85% of Unity students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and over 75% come from immigrant families whose home language is not English. Unity offers a rigorous curriculum and intensive support responsive to the individual developmental and academic needs of students, which allows them to achieve academic success and positive social/cultural development.
Responsibilities of Computer Science Teacher
- Teach introductory Computer Science for 9th and 10th graders
- Build in collaboration with team of teachers and administrators, the Technology and Digital Arts Pathway at OUHS, including High School curriculum, dual enrollment in college courses, industry/university partnerships, and work-based learning sequences
- Participate in development and teaching of cross-curriculum projects that incorporate technology and/or digital arts into all subject areas
- Collaborate with Career Counselor/Internship Coordinator to ensure students have high quality work-based learning opportunities (field trips, job shadowing, and internships)
- Serve as student advisor and implement advisory curriculum
- Maintain professional and respectful relationships with students, peers, families, and community members
- Develop and implement academic curriculum in accordance with CA state academic standards
- Participate in weekly staff development and team meetings
- Develop and uphold established school policies, protocols, and procedures
Qualifications
- Valid California teaching credential or eligibility for an intern credential program
- OR 3+ years professional experience in Computer Science
- Ability to participate in teamwork and shared decision-making
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Passionate about working with urban youth, families, and communities
- Proficiency in coding (one or more computer languages)
- Spanish language proficiency (preferred, but not necessary)
- Experience with one or more of the following: open source software, mobile application development, games, robotics, VR, machine learning, 3-D printing and design applications; digital arts (photography, animation, electronic sound and music, graphic design).
Compensation
- Salary $50,000 - $72,500
- Reimbursement for up to $2,000 moving/travel expenses
- Full 100% employer-paid health benefits (medical, dental and vision) for the employee and qualifying dependents
- Retirement system through the California State Teachers Retirement System (CALSTRS) if credentialed + the option of 403B enrollment
- 3% matched 457(b) retirement saving contribution after three years of employment
- Opportunities to earn additional compensation for leadership roles and responsibilities as assigned by the principal
