Job Description
The Dallas Morning News is looking for a data reporter to join its award-winning investigations and data team. This role is one of the most collaborative positions in the newsroom. You'll partner with reporters, editors, photographers, videographers and, audience engagement editors to help produce data analysis and reporting for ambitious in-depth investigative stories and quick-turn dailies. You'll also have the opportunity to pitch, report, and develop your own project ideas.

The News' data team is currently composed of a data journalist, a graphics reporter, a news apps developer and an illustrator. We are united together as storytellers. We have a wide range of skills, including data analysis and visualization. We work on a diverse set of topics, including elections and state government, health, education, and the criminal justice system
Job Requirements
About you
Here's our list of preferred skills and experience: (Please note this is not a checklist of requirements, but should be considered as a pool of preferred qualifications.   • You have experience reporting on stories based on data.
  • You have experience working with large datasets, including:
    • Cleaning and parsing datasets efficiently/performantly
    • Standardizing and combining large datasets
  • You're familiar with data analysis tools like Python Pandas, Rust Polars, R dplyr, SQLite, PostgreSQL or similar.
  • You have geospatial data analysis experience with tools like Geopandas or QGis.
  • You have experience scraping sites and building databases.
  • You have experience publishing or sharing databases internally or publicly.
  • You're collaborative and adept at working with writers, editors, and photographers to execute large projects. You want to have a voice in story direction, especially in areas that pertain to data reporting and/or visual execution.
  • You're capable of pitching and reporting your own projects. While we work with other departments in the newsroom, we are not primarily a service desk and take pride in producing our own work.
  • Knowledge of Node.js, Django or some other back-end web development framework.
  • Experience deploying applications hosted in AWS or similar cloud environments.
  • You are familiar with data visualization libraries in JavaScript, such as D3, Mapbox GL JS, and/or Leaflet.
  • You know React or Svelte, or you are interested in learning it.
  • Familiarity with database software such as PostgreSQL, SQLite, or MongoDB.
  • Skills in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign.
  • You're familiar with Git workflows, including Git-LFS, pull requests, branching, and merging.
  • You have experience writing front-end code in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to support and present your work to readers across various screen sizes and devices, whether that be digestible data visualizations or more full-fledged story presentations.
  • You have proficiency with standard off-the-shelf data visualization tools such as Flourish or Tableau.
