The Sunrise Association – which operates the world’s only full-summer free day-camps and year-round programs for children with cancer and their siblings - is seeking a passionate and experienced Comptroller to manage the financial and accounting responsibilities for our rapidly expanding non-profit organization.
As Comptroller, you will play a critical role in ensuring sound financial management and compliance. Responsibilities - Finance:
· Monitor and evaluate accounting procedures, internal controls, and database management to identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes.
· Ensure accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions in compliance with accounting standards and organizational policies.
· Provide guidance and support to the Sunrise accounting staff, fostering professional development, and maintaining a high level of performance.
· Collaborate with our sister organization’s staff to establish effective communication channels and streamline financial processes.
· Review and validate expenditures, ensuring correct coding to cost centers and providing accurate reporting for financial analysis.
· Prepare comprehensive monthly closing reports for review by the CEO, including general ledger reconciliation, departmental budgets, and regular profit and loss reporting.
· Develop and maintain program management tools and systems that align with fiscal policies to effectively track and manage financial resources.
· Perform monthly variance analysis to identify discrepancies and implement corrective measures, including preparation of cost and staff allocation analysis by department.
· Oversee and coordinate the annual financial audit, liaising with auditors and addressing any findings or recommendations.
· Prepare grant budgets as requested, aligning financial resources with programmatic goals, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
· Responsible for the NetSuite CRM management, and staff training, ensuring system optimization and security.
· Review financial records of community partner organizations that receive support from the Sunrise Association to ensure proper utilization of funding.
· Collaborate with our sister organization on chargebacks and billbacks, ensuring accurate and timely reconciliation of financial transactions.
· Perform any other duties and responsibilities typically expected in the role of a Controller.
· Oversee benefits programs, including but not limited to life insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, pension plans, vacation benefits, sick leave, and leaves of absence.
Experience Requirements:
· Master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field; CPA qualification preferred.
· 5-7 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, ideally in a non-profit setting.
· Proven track record of overseeing financial operations, including budgeting, reporting, internal controls, and financial analysis.
· Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and compliance standards within the non-profit sector.
· Experience managing and leading teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
· In-depth proficiency with financial management systems (e.g., NetSuite, Abila) and advanced Excel skills for financial analysis and reporting.
· Experience with financial audits and coordinating the audit process.
· Strong analytical skills and attention to detail for data analysis and insights.
· Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for presenting financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
· Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate across departments.
· Exceptional organizational and time management abilities to handle diverse tasks and meet deadlines.
· Ethical decision-making skills and ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
· Knowledge of fundraising and grant management processes is a plus.
· This is an on-site position: Candidates must be able to commute to our Oceanside, NY offices.
