This position calls for providing emotional support and a stable environment for victims of domestic violence residing in the CARE Center Emergency Shelter. The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the day-to-day operation of the shelter. This position is responsible for greeting victims and children entering the shelter and helping them get acquainted with their surroundings. This person answers the crisis line and is responsible for completing an initial assessment in order to respond appropriately to the situation. This position is responsible for supervising the residents in the completion of household chores, explaining shelter guidelines, providing opportunities for recreation for shelter residents, assisting with preparing some meals, resolving disagreements that may arise and providing life skills coaching.
This position gathers information from victims and prepares the paperwork necessary to make the information available to the CARE Center Counselors to develop appropriate services plans. The worker must complete accurate written documentation of all crisis calls, required shelter reports and activities, shelter intake activities and completed training.
The work schedule varies, with a 40-hour week. Normal hours are evening and early morning hours Monday through Friday. Both day and evening hours are required on weekends and holidays. This position involves over-night stays at the shelter. The worker must be able to work independently and use good judgment with minimal on-site supervision.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical effort expended in this position is normally limited to the moving of light objects such as groceries or cleaning supplies. The worker may also assist clients with luggage or other personal belongings. This person may be required to transport a client or travel to the CARE Center office on occasion. The person must be able to walk up and down a flight of stairs in order to secure the building and to ensure safe shelter operations.MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through two years of experience in performing similar instructional and community placement tasks; or graduation from a two-year associate degree program designed to prepare support personnel for human services agencies which includes a six month practice/internship in a similar setting (one year of the above experience may be substituted for the practice).
PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: An associate degree in a Human Services field and experience in crisis intervention is preferred OR High School and at least six (6) months of additional training or experience in a group home or shelter setting in addition to the required minimum education and experience.

The employee in this position will be operating motor vehicles for Cumberland County and shall have a valid North Carolina Drivers License.
