Position: Full-Time Community Organizer for Justice & Safety

Location: 1 Centre Street 15th Floor, North Building

Overview: The Public Advocate for the City of New York is a citywide elected official who serves as a direct link between the electorate and city government, effectively acting as an ombudsman, or "watchdog," for New Yorkers by providing oversight of city agencies, investigating citizens' complaints about city services and making legislative or policy proposals to address perceived shortcomings of those services. The Public Advocate presides over New York City Council stated meetings and is a non-voting member of the Council with the right to introduce and co-sponsor legislation. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams seeks qualified candidates who value all of the diversity that exists within New York City, and believe that all New Yorkers deserve a government that is equitable, efficient and accountable.

Job Description: Under the leadership of the First Deputy Public Advocate and reporting to the Deputy Public Advocate for Justice & Safety, the Community Organizer will work with local communities on grassroots campaigns across their specific area of focus, as well as conduct research on policy and legislation. With community engagement and advocacy experience in diverse communities, the Community Organizer will identify key issues, implement campaigns and special initiatives as part of the Community Engagement team.

Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with stakeholders across specific issue area(s), including but not limited to community based organizations, advocacy groups, non-profit organizations, and community activists;
  • Draft policy memos and research reports addressing criminal justice and public safety issues.
  • Execute organizing strategy under direction of Deputy Public Advocate and ensure alignment with the Public Advocate’s overall citywide vision;
  • Identify key issues within subject area and develops action plans to address them;
  • Attend and create space for community and grassroots meetings and build relationships with a vast pool of stakeholders.
  • Serve as liaison to and synthesizes information from Constituent Services team to create strategic plans addressing pervasive constituent issues;
  • Prepare talking points and other materials necessary for the Public Advocate for speaking engagements and interviews as needed.
  • Work intersectionality with other office portfolio’s to integrate justice and safety issues.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with community engagement, grassroots organizing, or advocacy work;
  • Can work effectively between the intersections of criminal justice reform and public health, specifically the criminalization of homelessness, mental illness and drug use.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and/or experience with policing, the court system, and correctional institutions in New York City.
  • Demonstrates specific knowledge of criminal justice and public safety issues.
  • Demonstrated relationships with key stakeholders of influence within the community of criminal justice and public safety advocates.
  • Self-starter with the ability to hit the ground running from day one;
  • Experience working with diverse communities and including their contributions in an intentional and meaningful way;
  • Demonstrated understanding of systemic and institutional bias, root cause analysis, and the generational impact within our City;
  • Familiarity with city and state government and agencies;
  • Bilingual/multilingual proficiency desired;
  • Ability to maintain composure under extreme pressure situations;
  • Ability to multi-task in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • New York City residency is required within 90 days from hire date.

Salary:

  • $55,000 (35 hours weekly)
