Community Organizer Position Description
The Southeast Community Organization (SECO) is a nonprofit neighborhood association promoting resident involvement in community issues, and ensuring that neighborhood voices are heard in government decision-making. We address issues related to transportation, economic development, recreation, community building, renters rights, and general neighborhood improvement. We develop and sponsor community events, projects, and programs that build community connections and enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
The Community Organizer position
The Community Organizer assists the executive director in community engagement efforts related to event and program coordination, door-knocking, communications, staffing board committees, and other areas assigned by the executive director. This is a 32 hour per week position. 20 of the weekly hours are grant-funded and focused on the eastside expansion of the Evie rideshare network. The grant funding runs through December 2025. The remaining 12 hours per week of this role will be focused on supporting SECO’s existing work with special focus on Housing Justice and renter engagement.
Event and Program Coordination
- Plan and execute SECO’s community engagement events in collaboration with the executive director, board members, and volunteers (e.g., annual meeting, summer entertainment series, drop-off day, canvassing, phone banking, community informational sessions, Sun Ray spooktacular).
- Assist the Housing Justice Committee in planning and executing renter outreach and empowerment programming.
- Administer SECO’s annual election and new board member training in coordination with the executive director.
- Assist with any new community events and programs to meet identified resident needs.
Committee Support and Outreach
- Attend Housing Justice Committee meetings (schedule in flux) as well as SECO Board meetings (one monday per month) if requested.
- Help recruit new members to the SECO Board and SECO Committees
- Represent SECO at district council meetings and others as determined by the executive director.
- Attend meetings with the Evie Rideshare Network
- Conduct surveys, canvasses, and phone banks
- Build SECO’s presence in neighborhood apartment complexes
Required Qualifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to create and maintain network of relationships
- Organizational skills, including an ability to establish priorities, work efficiently with frequent interruptions, and plan events
- Critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Ability to handle change and conflict with professionalism and grace
- Demonstrated comfort working with diverse ages, ethnicities, and income levels
- Enthusiasm for community engagement work
- Skills in organizing and maintaining detailed records and data for reporting purposes
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, social media, and other computer skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working as a community, labor, or campaign organizer
- Knowledge or experience regarding renters rights issues
- Experience working within Saint Paul, especially in local government or nonprofits
- A connection to the Southeast Saint Paul community
- Bilingual Somali, Hmong, or Spanish
Status: 32 hours per week; will require some evenings and weekends
