Position Overview

A student communication associate position is open at KU Student Affairs. A successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Student Affairs Communications Coordinator to create promotional materials for students, staff, community members, and families. This position will require skills in graphic design, photography, videography, and writing.

An ideal candidate will be detail-oriented and have strong skills in visual storytelling, written communication, and organization.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs coordinates and develops student support programs and services and serves as an advocate for student needs across the university community that contributes to overall academic success. Student Affairs extends beyond the classroom. Our mission is to engage the KU community in programs and services that make learning possible.

Job Description

The student Communications Associate will create video and graphic design content, manage multiple social media accounts, and assist with the promotion of the Student Affairs departments and programs via print and digital media. Work will mostly be completed in KU Memorial Union Suite 400, with some flexibility to complete work elsewhere on campus.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    Photograph, film, and capture events as requested by Student Affairs staff. Draft and edit communications copy and material for student audiences. Edit video content to be shared on various platforms. Assist with the planning and execution of a social media plan for the academic year. Attend and participate in trainings and events. Promote an environment of inclusion for all members of the KU campus community. Report work hours and complete timesheets as directed by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
  1. Must be in good academic standing and enrolled in a least 6 credit hours at the University of Kansas.
  2. Experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office tools including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
  3. Website content management experience (e.g., Drupal, Word Press, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.)
  4. Availability to work some nights, mornings, and weekends.
  5. Must value diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and the workplace.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Proficient with social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram.
  2. Experience reviewing analytics and using them to inform communication strategies.
  3. Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite.
  4. Familiarity with an inclusive approach to strategic communications.
  5. One year of experience in written or visual storytelling, communications, graphic design, or administration.

Eligibility for Work Study Preferred
Employees will need to attend some events that may occur in the evenings and occasionally in the early morning.
