Duties and Responsibilities
Organisational Setting and Reporting In its resolution A/RES/72/279, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the transformation of DCO as stand-alone coordination office within the United Nations Secretariat. DCO assumes managerial and oversight functions of the resident coordinator system under the collective ownership of the members of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG). The position is located in the Communications and Results Reporting Section of the United Nations Development Coordination Office (DCO) Headquarters in New York and is for a period of six (6) months. The Intern would work remotely under the supervision of the Digital Strategist and the Public Information Officers in the Communications and Results Reporting section. Responsibilities The Section is looking for motivated candidates who wish to gain hand-on experience in the UN, particularly in: (1) Editorial and Multimedia Content (2) AI-related experimentation and (3) Knowledge Management and Communications and any other related duties, as required. with the following duties: 1) Supporting the team on key upcoming events/ editorial campaigns by: • Identifying, researching and drafting content (text, photos, documents and multimedia) and innovative digital formats for publication (website and social media), pertaining to support the upcoming global Conferences on Small Island Developing States and Landlocked Developing Countries, as well as other UN priority issues; • Brainstorming and piloting new storytelling formats for targeted audience, including youth, on DCO’s websites ahead of and during the 2024 Summit of the Future; • Creating and editing infographics and social videos to accompany stories relatable to global, regional and local audiences on various channels and languages; 2) Supporting the team with Artificial Intelligence- related experimentation for communications by: • Undertaking research on various functionalities on Microsoft’s CoPilot and other AI tools in the public domain, including tips and tricks relevant to Communications and Results Reporting; • Identifying areas for experimentation and innovation within various communications workstreams; • Participating in research and providing inputs about good practices in AI for good; • Liaisinging with DCO’s AI Lab and country teams to help test various use cases on AI-assisted communications, documenting lessons and replicability; • Making recommendations to the team on new tools and practices to test; 3) · Supporting the team with additional knowledge management and digital communications by: • Supporting in the development and maintenance of a stories and digital content repository; • Contributing to website restructuring, tagging and quality assurance; • Assisting in optimising websites for correctness, accessibility and search engine performance; • Contributing to monitoring the usage of website and social media accounts using analytics and other statistical tools and techniques; • Undertaking events coverage and notetaking as necessary; • Maintaining and updating media and subscription mailing lists for the Section and assisting in distributing various information products; • Contribute to updating social media inventories of UN country team and Resident Coordinators’ accounts.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Development Coordination Office, applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: 1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in journalism, communication, media studies, digital communications, filmmaking, international relations or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in journalism, communication, media studies, digital communications, filmmaking, international relations or related field (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in journalism, communication, media studies, digital communications, filmmaking, international relations or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; 2. Applicants must have strong writing skills in English; 3. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), Adobe (InDesign, Illustrator), design and email marketing platforms such as Bee pro, Canva, Mailchimp; 4. Be computer literate in standard software applications and content management systems (Drupal 10). Experience using AI tools or an interest in learning about AI-assisted communications is an asset; 5. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and 6. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of any additional official UN language is an advantage.
