The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is the number one school of public health in the U.S. and the oldest and largest, public health school in the world. Through education, research, and practice, its The Bloomberg American Health Initiative works to tackle critical, 21st century challenges to public health in the United States, aiming to improve health and save lives nationwide. The Initiative has five focus areas: addiction and overdose; environmental challenges; food systems for health; risks to adolescent health; and violence. The Bloomberg American Health Initiative seeks aCommunications and Marketing Associate, Bloomberg American Health to promote the Initiative's research, practice, and educational portfolios across owned channels, social media, earned media, and events. The Communications Associate reports to the Communications Officer, and will work proactively with faculty, students, and staff on developing, writing, editing, designing and integrating content.


The Initiative's communications team will be part of the Bloomberg School's award-winning Communications and Marketing team under the Associate Dean for Communications and Marketing at the School's Office of External Affairs (OEA), with a dotted line to the Initiative's leadership of the Associate Officer and Officer.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create content in support of the Initiative's overarching communication strategy and policy agenda, spanning a weekly newsletter, social media, podcast, news releases and media advisories (collaborating with the media team on the OEA Communications and Marketing team), web articles, videos, and other formats as agreed upon to promote the work of the Initiative.
  • With the Initiative's communications officer to determine best approaches for content channels to support the Initiative's overarching content strategy and Communications and Marketing goals.
  • Collaborate closely with Initiative faculty and students to learn about their work and find ways to highlight their research and impact.
  • Write, design, edit and produce reports, news releases and media advisories, infographics, announcements, campaigns, brochures and other documents to capture the breadth and depth of the Initiative's work.
  • Write and refine op-eds, talking points, key messages, media pitches, presentations, and other Communications and Marketing materials in collaboration with faculty, fellows, leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Support the promotion and dissemination of Initiative reports and publications, including developing and monitoring production schedules.
  • Manage the Initiative's social media accounts and content, and support the paid social media marketing efforts.
  • Monitor and measure social media engagement and actively engage online with the Initiative community.
  • Report on social media analytics and offer recommendations on how to improve the reach and effectiveness of communications on those channels.
  • Lead on the creation of content for the Initiative's weekly newsletter.
  • Maintain the Initiative's website as a key hub for Initiative news, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Maintain updated subscriber, partner, and stakeholder lists relevant to communications outreach.
  • Work closely with colleagues across the Bloomberg School's Communications and Marketing team to ensure content and media materials meet the highest standards of quality.
  • Ensure all communication projects and Marketing efforts comply with the University Branding Guidelines of JHU Use of Name Guidelines.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience using web content management systems.
  • Experience using newsletter publishing software (i.e. Mailchimp, Constant Contact)
  • Experience using, translating, and applying Google Analytics.
  • Experience with design software/programs (i.e. Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, iMovie)
  • Ability to appropriately and frequently communicate and collaborate with a wide array of internal and external partners
  • Experience with social media platforms and website content generation and management.
  • Experience with earned and free media to further brand and program coverage.
  • Experience leading/managing projects and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work well under pressure with demanding and/or shifting deadlines
  • Excellent work attitude and habits including strong interpersonal skills, reliability, flexibility, self-motivated and the ability to think and work independently and as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and critically in problem-solving and project implementation.
  • Project management experience.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong interest in public health and public health policy.
  • Excellent content creation and organizational skills and attention to detail.

Starting Salary Range: $61,070-$83,900-$106,710 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
