Job description

Overview:

The Commercial Loan Officer is responsible for soliciting, negotiating, underwriting and coordinating the closing of commercial real estate, commercial lines of credit, commercial equipment, SBA, and other business loans in compliance with the Bank’s lending policies and procedures; manages and maintains an existing and/or assigned loan portfolio; develops business checking and deposit relationships with customers; and promotes business for the Bank by maintaining good customer relations and referrals for new services.  The position of Commercial Loan Officer assists in attaining established Bank, region and branch goals through active participation in sales management and officer call programs.  The Commercial Loan Officer will work primarily in Manistee County.

Responsibilities and Results:

  • Engages in business development activities and solicitation of new business in Manistee County while remaining actively involved in instilling and maintaining a positive sales environment through education of the Bank’s products and services.
  • Interviews prospective applicants and requests information related to loan or credit application and corresponds or re-interviews applicants to resolve questions regarding application information.
  • Performs prequalification assessment and analysis of financial condition and risk of financing requests for both new loans and renewals within framework of Bank’ lending policy, credit culture and current economic and industry trends.
  • Meets with existing or potential customers and gathers and analyzes all information necessary to present financing requests; performs site visits; negotiates loan terms and conditions; approves loans within established lending limits or refers and recommends acceptance to appropriate individuals or committee.
  • Coordinates processing of approved loans; ensures loans are processed according to approval, customer needs and conform to Bank lending policies; obtains sufficient information and/or documentation from customers; promptly addresses any issues that arise relative to processing and servicing of loans within his or her portfolio.
  • Completes and provides commitment, engagement, and denial letters as needed.
  • Applies superior customer service with prompt follow through with involved customers and employees.
  • Exhibits, develops, and maintains knowledge of financial industry, economy, market conditions, rates, vendors and competition.
  • Represents the Bank in various community, civic, and community reinvestment functions.
  • Cross sells the Bank’s other products and services, referring customers to appropriate staff.
  • Performs collection activities as needed and updates and corresponds with legal counsel and collectors on workouts, bankruptcies, and charge-offs to ensure all appropriate actions or measures to collect are taken.
  • Assists in meeting annual loan and deposit growth goals assigned by Senior Management and participates in various internal committees as assigned by Senior Management.
  • Consistently applies superior decision making techniques pertaining to inquiries, approvals and requests as they apply to existing policies and procedures.
  • Works ethically and with integrity while upholding organizational values.
  • Assures compliance with all applicable Bank policies, procedures and processes, and all applicable state and federal banking laws, rules and regulations
  • Shows respect and sensitivity for cultural differences; educates others on the value of diversity; promotes working environment free of harassment of any type
  • Performs related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

 

Work Experience:

  • 1-3+ years related experience and/or training
  • Work experience should consist of financial analyzing or lending background

 

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of related state and federal lending an compliance regulations and other Bank lending policies
  • Experience, knowledge and training in various lending types, activities, processing and terminology
  • Sales oriented, good interpersonal and excellent communication skills and a strong desire to succeed
  • Time management and organizational skills with attention to accuracy and detail
  • Ability to perform under pressure and adapt to changing and possibly stressful environment
  • Experienced with office machines, such as computer, phone systems, copiers, etc.
  • Knowledge of office management systems and procedures
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and other computer software
  • Ability to effectively communicate via phone and e-mail
  • Uses discretion and good judgement, shows patience with others

  • Ability to express and exchange ideas with customers and employees by means of the spoken word, either in person or on the phone
  • Ability to received detailed information through oral communication
  • Visual ability to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer screen and reading procedures
  • Speed and accurate use of computer, calculator and other business machines is required
  • Willingness to assume new responsibilities, ability to perform under pressure and adapt to changing and possibly stressful environment is expected
  • The ability to identify, assist with and resolve routine problems is expected
  • Working hours may vary
  • May be required to work in other branch locations as needed
  • On time attendance is expected

Working Conditions:

·     Generally good with some exposure to noise, heat, dust or other adverse factors

·     Climbing of stairs and some lifting of heavy items

·      A high amount of pressure to work efficiently, accurately and maintain good employee and customer relations 

·      Considerable effort and eye strain from computer work and continued checking of all detail work in the department
