Purpose of the Job
A Collector II is responsible for mitigating loss to the Credit Union by communicating with members with delinquent accounts and negotiating appropriate arrangements to cure the delinquency and return the member's account to good standing.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Notifies members of their delinquent status and collects on accounts by assessing situations and developing customized solutions to obtain payment. Creates and maintains accurate and timely documentation of all aspects of the collections process, including detailed notes of activity and member responses. Makes decisions, using collection techniques and financial analysis which mitigate Truliant's risk of loss while preserving member retention and promoting member loyalty. Responsible for the collection of delinquent member loans and credit cards and collection of overdraft balances. Interviews members by telephone and in person to provide credit performance consultation. Negotiates methods of payment or settlement and follows up appropriately when payment arrangements have not been met. Monitors member accounts and identifies signs of potential financial distress. Initiates action and responds to member disputes, servicing issues, and communication gaps to ensure resolution and protect positive member experience. Educates borrowers on matters related to force placed insurance, credit life and credit disability insurance and debt cancellation products. Resolves problem account escalations. Works with third parties such as attorneys, repossession companies, and collection agencies to maximize collection results. Mentors Collector I team members as needed. Initiates work out loan options with members and consults with Credit Administration to craft customized solutions. Answers calls and emails in select inbound queues that pertain to member accounts and specific inquiries. Utilizes communication and conflict resolution skills to resolve disputes and craft solutions in a calm and professional manner. Recommends loans for repossession or charge off when deemed uncollectible. Follow up and court appearance for seized vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have sound understanding of standard concepts, practices, procedures, regulations and compliance within the collections environment
  • Must have understanding of GL's and ability to balance reconciliation sheets
  • Must have knowledge of collection procedures; knowledge of bankruptcy concepts, repossessions and recovery is preferred
  • Must have excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written
  • Must have basic personal computer skills, including MS Office
  • Must be able to show persistence, determination and tact
  • Must be able to maintain objectivity and emotional stability under pressure
  • Must have ability to understand all business processes within the credit union
  • Must be detail oriented and well organized
  • Must be able to work in a general office environment
  • Must be flexible and able to shift resources and priorities as required
  • Must be able to complete all assignments with minimal supervision
  • Should possess a strong commitment to providing excellent service to Truliant's members

Physical Requirements
  • Occasional standing, walking, bending, and stooping required
  • Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time and use a computer
  • Must be able to moderately lift or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds

Education and Background
  • 5+ years experience in collections or related field required
