Code Enforcement Officer
Position Summary
Under general supervision, conducts inspections of properties and identifying violations to ensure compliance with City codes and ordinances and detect violations of State and local laws and codes. Issues notices and citations, resolves disputes, and responds to questions and inquiries regarding codes, ordinances, and violations.
Job Responsibilities
Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Enforces codes and ordinances by receiving complaints; conducting inspections of properties and construction sites; identifying ordinance violations; interpreting codes and ordinances; issuing citations and notices of violations; consulting with complainants; and conducting follow-up for compliance of any previous violations.
  • Maintains records of enforcement activities by identifying property locations; corresponds with potential violators; tracks progress of violations and compliance; updates records; records information regarding follow-up calls and site visits; prepares information for City Council meetings and possible court trials.
  • Provides administrative support by entering data for permits, responding to customer inquiries and complaints, copying and faxing permits to other departments, and maintaining supply inventories; represents the interests of the City; coordinates public outreach and education initiatives; acts as a liaison between the community and the City.
  • Provides support and information to internal and external customer by receiving and screening calls and emails and responding to inquiries; greets and directs walk-in visitors; provides general information; receives complaints and reroutes to appropriate department or individual; distributes mail and delivers messages.
  • Performs a variety of financial tasks to include processing invoices, making deposits, and collecting payments; enters new customer and vendor information into appropriate computer system; maintains various spreadsheets, logs, and files; schedules inspections for the Building Official.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  • Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
  • Maintaining accurate records, filing systems, logs, and technical documents.
  • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Preparing accurate reports and statements.
  • Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships.
  • Operating a computer and related software.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent and three (3) years of Code Enforcement related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Required Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
Must possess a Texas Code Enforcement Officer certification or obtain certification within one (1) year of hire.
A valid State driver’s license is required.
Work is performed in a standard office environment and at various properties throughout the City. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions and potentially irate customers. Operates standard office equipment such as personal computer and related software, fax machine, and copy machine.
Starting Salary:
$41,523 annually. If licensed, higher pay will be considered. Step increase after successful six-month probation.
