Job Title: Head 8th Grade Boys Basketball Coach, East Valley Middle School
Reports to:Middle School Activities Coordinator, Athletic Director, and Building Principal
Work Schedule: Per WIAA Season (season begins January 2, 2024)
Salary: EVCO Salary Schedule $2,517 - $3,844 for the season, depending on placement per experience.

Job Summary:
The Head 8th Grade Boys Basketball Coach works under the direct supervision of the Middle School Activities Coordinator and the Principal. The coach is expected to provide the necessary leadership and to plan, organize, and be responsible for the basketball team, and to carry out the objectives of the school athletic program. Middle school level coaches are expected to have had previous successful coaching experience and experience in playing the sport. Qualified candidates should possess strong communication, organizational, motivational, teaching, and coaching skills. This person should be a person of high character and values that will set a positive example for all students in the East Valley School District.
This position does NOT include a teaching position in the District.
Essential Job Functions:
This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:
  • Teach the fundamentals of basketball.
  • Teach appreciation of rules and regulations, care of equipment and facilities, fair play, respect for others, personal hygiene, and safety.
  • Hold necessary practices to prepare players for competition.
  • Maintain documentation to fulfill state and district requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Monitor and ensure scholastic eligibility of players.
  • Conduct self in an ethical and professional manner, model behavior during practices and games; model required discipline and ethical behavior for players.
  • Maintain good public relations with media, boosters, parents, officials, players, fans, etc.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff, and school administration.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, coaching staff, and the community.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to implement effective coaching theory, strategies, and techniques appropriate for Middle School athletics.
  • Ability to relate to and motivate student athletes of varying abilities, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds to instill commitment, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Responsible for the supervision of all students under their care.
  • Reports injuries to administration in a timely manner and ensures that a coach will accompany any injured player who requires medical attention.
  • Build and sustain a successful program that garners both financial and community support and is respected by the East Valley School District and community at large.
  • Availability to coach during vacation periods; some evening and weekend work will be required.
  • Assist the activities coordinator and principal in the hiring and/or retention of assistant coaches.
  • Ensures that all players are properly and safely equipped for their sport.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school district rules, administrative regulations, and board policies.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Requires the use of multiple communication systems, such as electronic mail and computers.
  • Inspect school or district facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
  • The employee shall maintain a consistent presence at the assigned work site(s) and work the regular work hours specified by the contract.
  • Professionally interact with colleagues, members of the public, and students.
  • Comply with all district policies and all applicable laws.
  • Perform special assignments and other duties as assigned or required by the supervisor.

  • Ability to organize and demonstrate skills to both coaches and athletes.

  • Ability to analyze the game and to create appropriate training sessions that reflect those observations.
  • Allow involvement and decision-making of players and student participants to the degree appropriate.
  • Encourage and recognize positive conduct at student activities.
  • Model sportsmanlike conduct in dealing with officials and opponents regardless of the circumstances.
  • Knowledge of proper English grammar, spelling, and usage in both oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written communication.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters and information in a professional manner.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with district staff to enhance the completion of assigned tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to upgrade skills to maintain the highest level of efficiency and high quality work.

  • Ability to work independently within the parameters of the job, without the need for constant supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Required to have or obtain a current First Aid/CPR card.
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Appropriate certification as determined by WIAA, the state and the District.
  • Knowledge, compliance and commitment to follow WIAA regulations.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of mobility.
  • Proof of Immunization preferred (if born 1/1/57 or later).
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act.
  • Completion of all district-required trainings within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee may be required to deal with distraught and/or angry persons and may be exposed to infectious diseases carried by children. The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment and can vary depending upon daily activity and sporting events.
Evaluation:
The Head 8th Grade Boys Basketball Coach shall be evaluated periodically by the Athletic Director pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the employee's performance of the above essential job functions and desired skills.
