Job Description

Caregiver Training Institute, a division of Bryan University, offers programs in Nursing Assistant (NA-1), CNA-2, and Medication Aide training programs. Our programs are popular and tend to fill up quickly. Our classes are active learning environments filled with a variety of students from pre-nursing students to English language learners, as well as people from all walks of life. You will be making a huge impact on people entering the medical field and teaching quality of care to our future healthcare employees. This is a fun and rewarding job. You will find that many of your students want to become nurses. You are training the next generation of healthcare providers. Recent graduates are not eligible to apply for this position due to OSBN regulations.

This is a part-time CNA- 2 Lab/Clinical Instructor (Evenings) position for qualified applicants living in the state of Oregon. We offer evening and/or weekend schedules, and this position can cover both as the schedules do not conflict. We conduct 1-2 evening classes per month and one weekend class per month. Please note that class times and days may vary with schedule revisions, holidays, etc.*Multiple part time instructor positions can be combined for more hours.

Schedules can be viewed on our website at: https://cnatrainingoregon.com/

Pay Range: $44-$48 (RN) per hour DOE

Position Summary of the CNA-2 Lab/Clinical Instructor part time/evenings:

The Clinical Instructor teaches the clinicals to a cohort of up to 10 students. During the clinical rotation your students will shadow staff CNAs, learn the role of the CNA, and practice their skills on the residents of the nursing facility where their clinical is located. We have several buildings around Portland, Gresham, Beaverton, and the surrounding areas that we teach in.

The clinical coordinator will prepare all paperwork, set the roster up, schedule the clinical at the facility, and clear all students for the clinical rotation. All students must pass the final exam and pass the lab rotation before entering the clinical. They also must have a current AHA BLS CPR card, a negative TB test, and a drug screening done prior to the clinical. The office staff will handle all of this for you.

At the clinical you will take attendance, hold a pre-clinical and post-clinical conference with all students (these last about 10-20 minutes long to assign students, go over the skills focus for the day, and de-brief them after the clinical is done for the day). You will be on the floor with the students, checking in on them often, demonstrating skills to them, making sure they are following infection prevention procedures, safety, confidentiality, and the many other aspects of giving quality care.

Training for this position is thorough. You will attend a full lab rotation to learn the skill steps, you will shadow another clinical instructor, and you will meet with the program director before you begin the training, during the training, and afterwards to discuss how your training is going. We want our instructors to be the best they can be so our training will take about 2-3 weeks.

We do not schedule classes or clinicals on holidays, holiday weekends, and at times the day before and after a specific holiday day. As an example, the day before and the day after Thanksgiving is not generally a scheduled day to teach. We do offer our classes back-to-back for most of the year; we do not run on a trimester or semester basis.

Responsibilities of the CNA-2 Part-TimeLab/Clinical Instructor:

  • Provide a quality training environment for the learners to be informed and absorb the materials each day.
  • Present a professional attitude about the medical field and nursing as a profession.
  • Present materials in a organized and concise way, leading discussions, answering questions, and helping to develop the student into a quality-trained caregiver for their position as a CNA in Oregon.
  • Demonstrate skills and work with students to learn these important steps for providing quality care to their patients and residents.
  • Complete the documentation as required.
  • Offer professional insight during all conversations with students.
  • Enforce the policies of the school, this may include counseling of the students, documentation of infractions, and potentially dismissing a student from the class the day and referring them to the Program Director. Instructors do not terminate students from their programs.
  • Follow a cohort of students in the clinical rotation and complete their training in that setting, assigning students to work with staff CNAs, observe, coach, and mentor students through the processes of giving care to our elderly residents, and emulate a professional standard in the facility training setting.

We are looking for (RN) nurses who have multiple skill sets and are seasoned in the nursing profession. You will be expected to act in a professional manner, be patient with the students at all times, you must be able to explain curriculum content effectively, and demonstrate all skills to the students.

Preference will be given to those nurses who:

  • Have been previously approved as an instructor through the OSBN, or
  • Have experience training adults in a formal educational setting.

Instructors should also have:

An understanding of the role of the CNA as well as their authorized duties, and ability to work with all students and meet their needs as well as take the cohort though the entire program and all materials.

Requirements of the CNA-2 Part-TimeLab/Clinical Instructor:

To be considered for this position you must be an RN with a current unencumbered license to practice in Oregon. We prefer nurses with experience in the LTC skilled nursing facility settings. Per OSBN regulations, nursing assistant instructors must have at least ONE (1) YEAR of FULL-TIME experience as a licensed nurse.

  • Nursing: 1 year (Required)
  • Acute Care (hospital) experience (Required)
  • Active RN license in Oregon (Required)
  • Work onsite as needed
