CMT (Construction Materials Testing) Spring 2024 internship

 

Alpha Testing, a Universal Engineering Sciences Company (UES) has an opening in our Construction Services Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.

CMT internship, during summer and fall 2024 semesters, performs or assists in performing routine field tests and observations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs field quality control tests on plastic concrete.
• Performs field density testing on soil, asphalt, and aggregate.
• Extracts field samples in borrow pits.
• Assists with drilling and sampling operations with hand-operated drilling equipment.
• May perform routine laboratory tests on soil, concrete, asphalt and other Construction Materials.
• Limited decision making.
• Prepares written electronic daily field observation reports and summary reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Conducts all work in a manner that demonstrates that safety is a core value.
• Follows Geotechnology's safety plans, programs, policies, and procedures.
• Conducts periodic jobsite safety observations.
• Participates in group safety meetings and jobsite tailgate safety meetings.
• Completes assigned safety training.

EDUCATION:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be currently enrolled at a university and pursuing an engineering degree.

EXPERIENCE:

• Zero to one year prior experience.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES (paid for by company):

• ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Level I Certification before June 2024
• Nuclear density safety trained before June 2024
• 10-hour OSHA Construction and defensive driver training before May 2024

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

•  Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
• Ability to perform routine field tests.
• Proficient with basic cell phone and computer usage for daily report entry.

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

• Dependable.
• Ability to verbally communicate and write in a clear, concise, legible manner. 
• Ability to work flexible hours which may include nights and weekends.
• Must possess the traits to promote good working relationships with fellow employees.
• Must have ability to communicate with contractor's or client's personnel and operate calmly under pressure.
• Must have valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand on feet the majority of the work day; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs and ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Frequent driving.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Frequent exposure to weather including hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather. Working conditions could be a combination based on season.
• Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss. 
• Exposure to a shaking object or surface. This factor is rated important when vibration causes a strain on the body or extremities. 
• Exposure to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation, which affect the respiratory system, eyes or, the skin. 
• Exposure to confined areas.
• Exposure to heights.
