Responsibilities

The Section of Cardiac Surgery offers expertise with some of the most advanced treatment options for cardiac conditions; with the lowest risk of mortality. Over the last 50 years, The Cardiac Surgical Team at Virginia Mason has pioneered clinical innovation, patient safety and patient-centered care as well as leadership in national and regional professional societies. We have been a regional leader in coronary bypass grafting (CABG) with ground breaking research on inflammation and cardiac surgery and improving the safety of the heart lung machine. In addition, they were pioneers in the use of "off-pump" CABG and early adopters of endoscopic vein harvesting. All of which improved patient outcomes and safety. Virginia Mason's heart surgeons were also the first in the region to provide minimally invasive ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. We currently offer all aspects of adult cardiac surgery including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, structural heart procedures, minimally invasive approaches, arrhythmia surgery and MCS. At Virginia Mason, we also offer comprehensive care for the most challenging cases including redo cardiac surgery, complex aortic surgery, revisional and multi-valve reconstructions and septal myectomy.
Our surgeons have been actively involved in The Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) Quality Research and Safety Committees writing standards for safe and appropriate cardiac care and following the motto "better never stops". Virginia Mason Cardiac Surgeons notably have also been former Presidents of The Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS), The Western Thoracic Surgical Association (WTSA) and The Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society (ECTSS).
The Clinical Program Manager is responsible for improving the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of nursing care provided to patients of a specialty care Clinical Program (e.g., geriatrics, enterostomal therapy) by conducting ongoing needs assessments to determine patient care improvement opportunities. This job also plans and provides nursing education programs to improve staff capabilities in providing care to these patients.
The responsibilities of the Clinical Program Manager in Cardiac Surgery for this position includes:
    • Plans, implements and evaluates specialty nursing care program activities in conjunction with senior nursing leadership, a Guidance Team, nurse managers and staff nurses. May collaborate with other disciplines during program planning and implementation.
    • Conducts research (e.g., literature reviews) as applicable to identify best practices and establish program objectives; monitors program outcomes against goals, including organizational safety goals, and makes changes as appropriate.Provides direct patient care/bedside consultation and consults with providers and staff who are providing care.
    • Provides education through verbal, written and hands-on experience to patients, family members, caregivers, staff, providers and management; may conduct presentations at workshops or public speaking engagements.
    • May manage and coordinate staffing and provide input on budgets for the assigned Clinical Program.

Qualifications
  • BSN, and current, valid Washington State Registered Nurse License, required.
  • Also required are: relevant clinical skill/experience; ability to analyze complex pathophysiological and patient care problems; experience in program planning, implementation and evaluation; the ability to identify the educational needs of the patients, family, and staff, and to develop and implement appropriate educational programs; public speaking skills; budgeting experience; excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Specialty certification may be required.
  • Master's degree in Nursing preferred.
