Under supervision, the Clinical Nurse Educator for Correctional Healthworks in collaboration with other members of the medical clinic and the 24-hour operation of nursing services offered at Maguire and Maple Street Correctional Centers to provide, enhance or improve health care delivery to inmates in locked correctional facilities, by evaluating nursing practices, developing methodologies and implementing standards of care, providing consultative services, as well as assessing and addressing patient and staff educational needs.
The Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for the orientation and competency assessments for the Maguire and Maple Street correctional facilities staff. Firsthand knowledge of the patient populations and workflow of Correctional Health Services is ideal. The Clinical Nurse Educator assesses staff competency on an ongoing basis and reviews charts for completeness of documentation and regulatory compliance. The Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for the ongoing and annual training and development of all the nursing staff and competency validation of staff in areas of de-escalation, suicide assessment seclusion/restraint, medication administration, trauma-informed care, legal issues and mandatory reporting. The Clinical Nurse Educator will participate in/facilitate QA activities on unit to identify staff learning needs, prepare staff for and execute Code Blue drills, as well as develop and implement various training and education opportunities for staff throughout the year. The position is 50% educator, 25% Continuous Quality Improvement and 25% direct patient care, depending on the needs of the unit.

- a background in providing care in a correctional environment.
- the ability to independently problem solve and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- a Bachelor's degree in Nursing with three or more years' experience in nursing.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Identify problem situations or issues in patient care; analyze, interpret, advise and consult with staff and other health care professionals to provide high quality, contemporary care.
- Interpret and modify the system of patient care delivered by evaluating and reviewing standard practices and initiating new procedures.
- Provide consultation and guidance to all levels of the nursing staff pertinent to patient care problems within the field of specialty.
- Advise the nursing staff in the establishment and maintenance of records of treatments given and the related progress of each patient for the purpose of analyzing patterns, synthesizing actions and evaluating patient care plans.
- Resolve and build problem solving skills of staff dealing with unusual or unique patient care problems or situations, which require analytical, interpretative and constructive thinking.
- Formulate and develop plans, procedures and program content designed to meet specifically identified training/educational needs of nursing staff.
- Conduct formal classroom instruction in the more difficult or complex areas of nursing technology requiring a knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles and theoretical concepts underlying specific nursing procedures or techniques.
- Formulate and/or collaborate with other health care practitioners to identify relevant clinical problems and conduct research to bring about their resolution.
- Communicate research findings by publication and presentation at professional meetings.
- Evaluate nursing research literature and own research findings for implementation and incorporation, as appropriate, into patient care activities.
- Prepare formal and informal descriptive articles in the specialty area for publication in national periodicals or for use in staff meetings.
- Serve as role model and resource person for staff and members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- A California license as a Registered Nurse.
- Possession and maintenance of BLS certification.
Education and Experience:
- Associate Degree in Nursing with two years clinical experience including one year in a clinical specialty area, or
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or a health-related field with one year of clinical experience including six months in a clinical specialty area, or
- Master's degree in Nursing.
