Clinical Laboratory Operations Manager

Under the direction of the Administrative Director of Laboratory Services, the Clinical Laboratory Operations Manager is primarily responsible for departmental operations to assure maximum efficiency. The manager is directly involved with the daily operations of the lab, delegating work and making schedule changes as needed. Acts as a technical resource for Medical, Nursing, and Laboratory staff and ensures appropriate training is provided to residents, new employees, and current employees on new procedures in a timely manner. The manager is directly involved in writing SOP’s, training, QA evaluation, documentation and assists in developing and modifying procedures and programs to ensure the consistent quality of our service. They attend/or participate in appropriate hospital and departmental meetings, committees, and programs. The manager will ensure the laboratory sections operate within budget and assists the lab director in reporting variances. The manager will work closely with the section supervisors to develop the operating budget proposal and present it to the lab director.
1. Patient Safety
Follows established hospital and departmental precautions and procedures in the
performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment for patients and others to include as appropriate:
- Demonstrates appropriate hand hygiene
- Demonstrates effective communication “hand offs” between providers, shifts, departments, etc.
- Demonstrates use of proper precautions including use of appropriate personal protective equipment
2. Manages laboratory personnel through the department supervisors in all aspects of
operations to ensure that our customers are satisfied with our services and quality according to established policies and procedures.
3. Provides direct supervision and leads the team of Clinical Laboratory supervisors
4. Provides timely feedback to supervisors and laboratory personnel.
5. Ensures work schedules and assignments are within the constraints of the operating budget and arranges for adequate coverage and efficient use of personnel.
6. Serves as a technical/troubleshooting resource to supervisors, staff, and customers.
7. Establishes and maintains quality control and assurance procedures consistent with those required of regulatory and accrediting agencies; must be effective in ensuring the consistent generation of reliable and accurate services.
8. Consistently demonstrates effective leadership, organization/planning and interpersonal skills and abilities.
9. Collaborates with section supervisors to ensure adequate supplies are ordered but remain within budget.
10. Works with the Laboratory Director to develop the annual Laboratory QA/QI goals and aligns these goals with the Hospitals Quality Assurance and Quality Indicators
Program. Maintains QA/QI procedures and ensures the implementation of all corrective action.
11. Ensure laboratory inspection readiness to meet the standards of JCAHO, CAP, CMS etc. , implements guidelines as necessary, is responsible for the departments inspection readiness serves on the laboratory's CAP inspection team.
12. Monitors the workload to ensure appropriate staffing levels; initiate adjustments in workload or staffing levels to ensure that productivity is maximized. Seeks out and
evaluates opportunities to achieve effective workload management and readily and willingly shares human resources, as necessary.
13. Communicates regularly with staff, keeping them informed of organizational and departmental change; encourages staff to communicate openly about problems, concerns or suggestions they may have; promotes participation in decision making, as appropriate; keeps the laboratory director current with all activities in the laboratory.
14. Performs computer related activities as required in monitoring the quality of testing, workload, implementing new procedures and maintaining accurate statistical and patient demographics. Works cooperatively with other departments to meet the goals of the laboratory.
15. Manages departmental software access and training (MediaLab, Sunquest, EPIC, QML etc.), Ensures all documents are current and approved in the document control system.
16. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director, executes the HRM function (interviews, hires, orients and trains, performance management and evaluations).
17. With the assistance of the Laboratory Director and input from each lab supervisor is responsible for developing the annual Clinical Laboratory Operational and Capital budgets.
18. Supervises the Send-Out Test Program. Coordinates and tracks utilization with Pathologists. Coordinates with reference laboratories to ensure rapid turn-around-times and seamless delivery of results. Works cooperatively with the LIS analyst to build testing and ensures correct billing processes.
19. Functions as a liaison between Brigham & Women’s Faulkner Hospital Laboratory and the clients that use our services
20. With the assistance of the Laboratory Director, markets laboratory services to our in- house physician offices
21. Functions as the liaison between Research personnel, for set up and procedures needed per research protocol.
22. Monitors and responds to Patient Satisfaction and patient/client complaints.
23. Assumes departmental responsibilities in the absence of the Director, Laboratory Services and is accountable to the Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratories
24. Ensures payroll is completed accurately each week
25. Functions as a team player, helping out in all areas when needed
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related science from an accredited school required
- Master’s Degree in related science preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS
- Current M.T.( ASCP) or equivalent certification is preferred
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive laboratory managerial experience required.
