GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
We are seeking college graduates with a strong interest in medicine and microbiology to perform laboratory work in support of clinical research studies including a Lyme disease vaccine clinical trial. Although successful candidates will be hired into the MGH Clinical Microbiology laboratory, they will only perform testing on research subjects. Activities will be performed independently under close supervision of the principal investigator and will involve a broad range of procedures including-but not limited to-bacterial culture, microscopy and molecular biological techniques, along with human sample processing.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Receiving, accessioning, processing and archiving human samples, including sample tracking
- Independently performing laboratory tests on human samples (after training), and documenting results
- Learning and utilizing techniques in microbiology, molecular biology, pathology and cell biology
- Perform lab administrative and maintenance responsibilities including ordering and tracking of laboratory supplies, record keeping, changing gas canisters, autoclaving, maintaining and disinfecting instruments and equipment
- Prepare lab reagents and chemicals
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
May be responsible for training and assessing competency of other staff (up to 2 FTEs).
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsible for ordering/purchasing laboratory supplies and reagents and managing budget.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Excellent organizational skills, communication skills, and ability to work both independently and as part of a team are mandatory. Must be a fast learner and self-starter.
EDUCATION:
A bachelor of science degree with a major in a hard science is required.
