A Brief Overview
The Genomic Diagnostic Laboratory (GDL) of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is seeking a highly motivated Clinical Lab Supervisor for our clinical Cytogenetics team consisting of Technical Specialists and Medical Laboratory Scientists. This is an exciting opportunity to join our laboratory where we use a wide variety of cytogenetic and molecular test methodologies for diagnostic and monitoring purposes, primarily in pediatric populations. Cytogenetic techniques applied to constitutional and somatic samples in our lab include karyotyping and FISH. The successful candidate will have a strong cytogenetic background that will be applied to training (i.e. team members, fellows, and other rotating students), clinical cases (including determination of appropriate follow up studies, as needed), and troubleshooting. Job responsibilities include scheduling work duties, providing semi-annual performance reviews, assuring that all accreditation requirements are in full compliance, participating in quality improvement initiatives, and working closely with lab leadership (including directors, managers, and supervisors). We seek a leader who has an interest in strategic planning to transform our current workflows with a focus on modernization to improve quality and efficiency. This position is on-site at our campus in Philadelphia, PA.
What you will do

  • Schedule work duties
    • Justifies overtime in writing within three working days
    • Schedules staff, monitors and maintains budgeted hours including overtime
    • Constantly reviews and improves systems for increased efficiency and eliminates rework and waste.
    • Responsible for all technical work performed
    • Ensures that established turnaround time thresholds are met for STAT, urgent, and routine testing
    • Assures that licensing and accreditation requirements are in full compliance
    • Participates and passes all proficiency testing
    • Stays within federal and state guidelines
    • Ensures all procedure manuals are up to date
    • Reviews procedure manuals annually
    • Maintains and controls supply and reagent inventory
    • TQM-CQI
    • Participate in at least one TQM-CQI project
    • Inter/Intra-Departmental Committees
    • Participate in at least one committee during year
    • Provides an environment of open communication

    • Establishes department standards of excellence; assures consistent implementation by all staff.

    • Prepares and monitors budget(s) for assigned area(s).
    • Supports, enforces, and interprets institutional/departmental policies and procedures.
    • Compiles with CHOP safety, infection control and security policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
    • Participates in professional and community activities.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to render age-appropriate care and services based on patients' developmental needs. If applicable, please state the specific age range of patients (0-21)

Education Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or similar field of study. Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or similar field of study. Preferred
  • Licenses/certificates/registrations: ASCP or related specialty certification preferred

Experience Qualifications
  • At least three (3) years of practical laboratory experience including instrumentation Required
  • At least five (5) years of practical laboratory experience including instrumentation Preferred
  • Management experience preferred
  • Experience with chromosome analysis, FISH, probe labelling, and SNP microarray preferred

  • Demonstrated leadership ability
